I plan on doing two short performances for my local SCA group. I have never really performed magic in public but I perform several times a month as a musician.
One in December for Good Yule will most likely give me time to perform one effect as there are many other performers. I am thinking a short cups and balls or chop cup routine for this one, as cups and balls is a very medieval period effect. I January I will do a short 15 minute show for the kids at another SCA event. For this one I am not sure what I want to do. I was thinking of buying some Hippity Hop Rabbits, maybe Sponge Rabbits or a sponge ball routine, and maybe something with rope. I have a lot of time to prepare and am open to suggestion for what to perform for the kids. -Max |

For kids, buy a Magic Coloring book. In my experience, that is the best kids magic trick. 5-10 dollars and a great routine which garners a great reaction from parents and kids alike.

This is great news you have a gig and time to plan.
Magic colouring books are great. I use them in two ways. If a t a birthday I get the kid and his dad up. show the book un coloured the kid waves a wand and it all coloured. With a click of the finger I un-colour it. Then when the dad try’s it all goes blank. I also do a routine with 3 colouring book and 3 volunteers and it a chase the ace/ 3 card Monte idea. I think the cup and ball idea is great if your use to performing that. Just think can people see your table top if your on a stage. Also if I do a quick routine with lots of other performers I like to be able to turn up ready top go and be able to walk of straight away. So I would do a single rope routine with some ring moves or a 6 card repeat. Hopty rabbit’s is a great effect good for young kids. Is kids shows something your going to do a lot of. If not you don’t want spend to much. Look at effects you have that could be good for kids. If I do a kids show its usually for a friend kid and I just do 30min with a appearing cane, Single rope routine, egg bag and 6 card repeat. This is the type of thing I would do. So I hope this helps.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Sounds like some good advice! I might as well just buy a coloring book, as it is cheap enough.
Both of these are Medieval SCA events. I am fairly certain that there will be no raised stage platform for first and Iknow for sure there will be no stage at the second. If the kids show goes well, I will volunteer to do one each year for this event. I am also working on a routine that uses a Lotta Bowl and a MAK tea kettle. It will be a story of a quest to rescue a fair maiden from a wizard. This wizard has a keep in the middle of a desert that only someone with a magical water pitcher could cross without dying of thirst. The keep is also guarded by trolls that will pass out after a few colored drinks while our hero always gets the clear water. It is just an idea so far and I will work on the story in the next week or two. Any more suggestions on stuff that plays well to kids? |

This sounds like so much fun! I never joined an SCA group, but the idea of a medieval wizard is just TOO GOOD! Congratulations on the gig!
If you can manage it (either with body or table loads) an appearance (or disappearance) would be nice. A square circle is also fairly easy to construct (although overhead daylight may be your enemy). Ropes are another thing that existed “back then”. Dan Harlan has a great idea for a modified Professor’s Nightmare that will even fool magicians who know the original. I can’t recall the name, but he is a member here.
...what if I could read your mind?

You can never go wrong with a good sucker routine like Hip Hop Rabbits...Die box is also good. The best sucker routine I've got is the Smokey Mountain Pizza Box. While expensive, I'm calling it the 21st century die box. The coloring book is also a grteat one for the kids.....if you can, look at Silly Billy's version....it's dynamite and sure fire entertainment for them.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I spoke with one of the planning people for the first event which is a medieval feast event. It turns out I will be doing some walk around and table hopping instead of a short performance. I think I will just develop myu lotta bowl routine for the next event.
Dan, thanks for the encouragement for my Lota/Teakettle routine! I am still working on getting the story worked out. I need it to be short enough but still sound like a period story. So now that I am going to be doing some walk around and table hopping, what effects work well for this situation? I was thinking of a short sponge ball routine. Maybe an effect I am working on with some Tarot cards and a pendulem. I might even try using the Tenyo Fortune Sticks. I am trying to avoid using regular playing cards since they look a little out of place in a medieval setting. |

I've found rope effects go over well in a strolling situation and would fit well into just about any period. Sponge balls, always a hit.
