I'm not sure what show it is, maybe Playboy After Dark. But, it's from 1960. |

That was fun! Thanks for the link! Don was the master of the Devano deck.

Thank you for posting this link, Mr. Munro! There is another performance of the Chop Cup routine on YouTube that I have seen, but this one is a much cleaner and clearer performance, I think. It is very close to the script as given in Ron Bauer's book, "The Complete Don Alan's Chop Cup Routine," and actually being able to study his performance will be, I expect, very helpful to me.

One of the reason's Don's Devano-style deck worked so good, they were made with needles for the "work" by Howard Bamman.
Posted: Oct 2, 2011 6:49pm Don was certainly in his PRIME on that show.

This is a slightly more recent performance of the same routine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX7ZOLmMBrU You can see the dents and bangs in the cup. As described in Ron Bauer's book, he really did bang that cup around. Without a doubt I prefer the 1960 version. |

On his Stevens video, the deck kept not working. Don never missed a beat. He just went on talking and adjusting it.

It takes some presence of mind to not skip a beat when your magic trick doesn't work. I'm still likely to gape when I mess up; I'm working on it though.

One of the beauty of having one is that when anything goes wrong, we are not personally in line and therefore come out more easily from such mishaps (even if I'm still crucified after 50 years by a miss in front of all my friends during a show at school when I was thirteen: for sure it contributed in making me a perfectionist trying to turn every stone) Albert Goshman was also a great user of the Devano deck

I had never seen that clip from the 60s before. MAN, those loads were fast! I can actually recall being about 5 or 6 years old and seeing Don, Paul Gertner and Bruce Cervon on That's Incredible. My favorite show back then.
