Hypothetical scenario: Prison guard can't take it any more and goes on a rampage, killing three inmates in the process. What do you think should happen to the prison guard?
I know there will be a lot of disagreement on answers but let's please try and maintain respect for each other on this one. This isn't intended as a debate question, but a reflection question. Explanations for your answer are optional.

Doesn't seem controversial to me. He should be tried according to the laws of the State the prison is in, and sentenced according to whatever crime he is convicted of committing. Sounds like three counts of murder in the second degree to me, but I am no lawyer. (There are probably a score of lesser charges to be brought as well.)

The mitigating factor is, put him in the prison he was guarding and his life won't be worth a plug nickle.
Granted, maybe he should have taken that into consideration, but how many of us take all the factors into consideration before going on a rampage?

Not much of a mitigating factor; if incarceration is appropriate, just put him in a different prison.

I would dock him half a days pay!

So far these have been very well reasoned responses. I'm hoping to get a few more.

I think he should be given the job of chief executioner.

Well, you said something about "Prison guard can't take it any more" ... if that means he had a nervous breakdown / went insane, I am assuming that this would be considered and taken into account in the normal way (according to the jurisdiction).

Too undisciplined. Read the memoirs of Albert Pierrepoint, the last British hangman, who hanged Bruno Tesche, Irma Grese, and Lord Haw Haw. Inter alia . . .

Well darn. These are all much too reasonable responses for the punchline to have any impact.
There were a couple folks from some other threads who I hoped would chime in similar comments here. Not to pick on them, but because it would have made this more interesting. I must admit the project was kind of deflated by Woland's first comment because a question in my head was "I wonder if anyone will ask for more details?" But that comment kind of rendered that question moot. Dissappointingly, you have all impressed me by looking at this reasonably. Ray Tupper's comment is the only one that would have worked, if he hadn't been joking. Well, just to illustrate what I was trying to do here, let's pretend someone had said: "Three dead convicts? Give the guy a medal!" If something like that had been said then the punchline would make sense, so let's pretend someone said it, just for fun. So here's what I had saved in my notepad, hoping one or two folks would make it relevant: The incident took place at a Women's Prison outside of Leavenworth, WA. Inmate 1: was a counsellor at a halfway house who was convicted of aggravated assault when she successfully defended herself against a rape by a former resident. Inmate 2: was a Sunday school teacher and mother of four who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter when her Chrysler minivan slipped on a patch of ice. Inmate 3: was a severely mentally retarded 20 year old convicted of tax evasion. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) only the smart kids came to play.

I maybe should have waited a little longer so those people can't show up after the fact with hindsight bias, but I didn't want the topic to get too stale. I figure a full day and night is enough.
Anyway, like I said, this was just for fun.
