The book is reviewed and discussed here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=110 It sells for $75.00, but I found it selling for as low as $45.00 on some sites. Sounds like a book I read years ago, written by a Hollywood person about becoming a star in acting. These books tend to inspire and let you know it possible to succeed. There are many roads to success, whatever that means to you. As there are as many definitions for success as there are people in the world. I think the title is mis-leading as I have not heard of all the stars mentioned. If you are star, most people have heard of your name. Oh well, just my ramblings. |

This is very true and it is a shame to some degree - Jeff Dunham is hilarious! By comparison, look at French magician Jean-Pierre Vallarino - he has been on TV all over the world (like Dunham) and has marketed some killer material, but in many countries he is still not so widely known. In France, he is practically a household name in some areas. |

To become a star you need five things ( I will save you some money), work, more work, more work, more work and luck.
Read the Success Books by Francis Marshall about becoming a star. You can be a star in your own hometown. I remember working (non magic) in Marietta, Ohio, almost 15 years after Tommy Windsor died. He still was the name for magic in that area after all that time. There are so many levels of success. There is nothing wrong with being a star in your own hometown. Richard

Richard.. you have luck in the wrong place, it should be second or third... and not enough "work"... you forgot chutzpuh, ego, a certain amount of entitlement, and going to all the right parties, forcing yourself into meetings, and getting out of where ever you are and getting to a major city... preferably LA or NYC to start if you're in the US.
Add to that, either a learned or natural talent for the BUSINESS side of show business, being smart enough to hire or steal from the right people. You have to come up with something new and exciting enough to capture the attention of the right agent, manager or patron, or you have to come up with something so old it seems new... and you have to be able to be creative enough to take advantage of them. Working your butt off for 15-20 years is the surest answer to becoming an "overnight success". |

There is SO much great advice on here! I always heard the phrase that there are three elements for success in show business: talent, perseverance, and luck. It only takes two of these to succeed.
We know people that are very talented and hang in there long enough, and even though they never get a lucky break they managed to succeed. There are those that are very talented and get a lucky break and become a success very quickly. There are also those who hang in there long enough and get a lucky break and become successful with zero talent. They are a mystery to some but according to this formula it can work. Keep in mind this is only for becoming successful, not becoming a star. That involves the magic combination of elements above, plus typically a large dose of charisma. The odds of getting struck by lightning or winning the lottery are much better than becoming a star in any field. I always thought a better goal is to become the best that you can be in your profession, then life can take its course and if you're destined to become that star it will happen at the proper time. If you do not have the talent and charisma which are vital components in this mix, no amount of research or reading can make it happen.

I've been telling a lot of friends lately (and myself too)
Few of us need another book or DVD or course, or magic book or trick. We need to DO what they all say, and take action steps. It's so easy to buy the next hot thing to make $$$ but all you end up with are shelves of books, and not bookings. It's about getting the basics down then DOING the work, not reading. As your business grows and grows and read more, learn, more DO more. But don't confuse knowledge with taking steps to a goal. Walt |

Walt, this is such great advice!
I went out with a girl one time who had virtually every self-help book on the market, and she was still nuts! It seems that everyone would rather sit in their recliner reading a book or watching a DVD hoping to find the secret that will assure an easy path to the top. I fully agree that more advancement will be made through hard work than waiting for a secret path to success. Sadly, I must now get out of my recliner and go work... shame,it is so warm and comfortable here!
