Hi,
I am an Impersonator/Actress, but I have knowledge of magic. I've dated magicians for years. At any rate, I'm writing a show right now that could use a fabulous spectacle illusion in it. I'd love to work with a magician during rehearsals eventually, but I wanted to get some ideas from any of you fine folks on this board. My first thought for this bit was to use the Zig Zag or some kind of illusion that's in the shape of the Zig Zag (Standing) that makes the assistant disappear and reappear. The issue is that my assistant needs to be a man, preferably one that is taller than 5'8 and has some muscular shape to him, as he will need to be able to dance. I know from experience that these illusions are small, and that they usually have a woman panted on the front of them, so I'm open to different illusion suggestions or customization options. I also remember seeing a Barbie Doll Box illusion in Las Vegas years ago. I think the magician was Nathan Burton. That illusion would fit my bit perfectly, but I don't know if it's something that's on the market for just any old production. My questions are basically this: 1.) Illusion recommendations? 2.) Can I have these boxes costumized? 3.) How and Where and Who do you recommend I contact? 4.) Is there an illusion that is better than the zigzag that would be more fit for a man to cut in half or manipulated in some form? (Meep, that sounds dirty) And 5.) How hard would it be for me to repaint the outside of the zig zag so that has a man's outline or a Ken Doll on the front of it? Thanks for any and all comments or advice! Ruby |

The Grand Illusion forum would probably get you better answers. Any major illusion builder can modify the illusion for any size person you want. Same with the paint job, pretty much any good illusion shop or even good sign painter could do it. As to the illusion, it depends on the venue in which you wish to present it. Some illusions have angles, as such cannot be used in the round, or may require special off stage assistance. Perhaps purchasing a basic illusion book or some video series such as Mark Wilson on Illusions will give you some idea of some of the more basic illusions and their angles and from that you can determine what would work for you.

You might check out Andrew Mayne and Paul Osborne illusion books.

Thanks guys! Very Helpful! I did post in Grand Illusion but somebody just sent me to Magic Venture, and they seem like the kind of people that deal with extremely high end clients. I am on a low budget. Like under $5,000. I did however find a few used illusion online stores through google, so I may have answered my own questions But I will definitely check out some illusion books before I purchase anything.
Thanks! Ruby |

Well, Ruby, if what you are looking for is a box that makes your assistant vanish and reappear, I suggest you check out Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. The Illusion section has a couple of possibilities for you. And the price for the book is pretty low!
This book is available in many public libraries and also from a lot of book stores. If you use this suggestion, you owe me a video of the performance! -Patrick |

I agree. The Mark Wilson and Paul Osborne books have good ideas. One in the Osborne book that might make sense for you is a utility cabinet -- a simple appearance/disappearance. It could be built to your specifications and pretty simply from any handyman type. You might also check out magicnook.com and look up their PVC pipe illusions. These are simple illusions you can put together using inexpensive materials. Use some creativity with fabric and paint and you could end up with a pretty cool looking illusion at a good price.

Hi Ruby!
Ya know, I've really gotten to like the unusual illusions created by Peter Loughran. I wonder if he could help you and really kick it up, if you know what I mean. http://www.masterofillusions.ca/ Doug |

Ruby-
Check your PMs. I sent you an expanded version of my suggestions. I just didn't want to post stuff that comes close to exposure on the open forum. That said, you'd have to actually read the book to know what I'm talking about, so it isn't really exposure, but still. Read the PM and see what you think. -Patrick |
