Greetings Magic Café Forumites! After some substantial lurking, I am pleased to be a member.
I am a very amateur magician, just really learning - although I have been focused on magic theory for some time. As a Security Adviser for the UN, I am keen to learn as much as possible about how magic principles and theories may be applied to the security sector. The Magic Café is so full of knowledge and talent, I am sure I will learn much. Lookimg forward to it! Cheers, Kirk |

Absolutely! I have read about Maskelyne's work in WWII, Robert-Houdin's in North Africa and Mulholland's for the CIA - all interesting stuff. My interests are not so grand - or deadly - as those great men. I am interested in everything from how to use mentalist techniques in interviews/interrogatioms to how to use misdirection, etc. In protecting UN assets, to how to improve hostile surveillance detection - and everything in between.

Sun Tzu wrote thousands of years ago that "all warfare is based upon deception" yet you can see that in the Art of Magic, deception is used to entertain people. A magician wages war and an assault on logic and reasoning but does so to entertain and amaze people. Once you have read those two books, then read the book "The Secret Art of Magic" by Eric Evans. "Secret Art of Magic" shows how Sun Tzu's principles from the "Art of War" and the 36 stratagems of deception used in warfare from "The Secret Art of War" can in turn be applied to the art of magic as a professional magician and entertainer. Here are some links: http://www.secretartofmagic.com/secret2.htm http://themagicwarehouse.com/BK8417/Secr......ans.html I have read this book (The Secret Art of Magic) from cover to cover and the recommended books have served me well when I served my country as a soldier and continue to serve me well as a civilian who is a professional magician. Hope you find these useful!

Welcome to the Café.
I do not know how magic might help you in your work, but it certainly will make you a better observer of other human beings behavior and movement. Best wishes |

I am a huge fan of "Art of War" too. I consider Sun Tzu to be "the enlightened conqueror" somebody who was not an advocate of conquest or war. As Sun Tzu wrote: "To win a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill." Timeless wisdom from Sun Tzu which can be applied to all aspects of life. You will find many keys to success in "The Art of War." Speaking as a veteran and a former soldier, I will say that Sun Tzu speaks to my heart. "The acme of skill is to win without fighting."
