Whit,
I have an upcoming opportunity to teach a class in close up magic at a local community college that would consist of four two hour classes for children in the sixth through eigth grades. I have a good idea of what basic effects I want to teach, but I would appreciate any input you could give as to what basic magic principles you think should be taught. I have ideas, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, man. Eighth graders? You are a brave man...
I taught my daughter to do "Fast and Loose" when she was in the first grade. It kept us from having to send her to school with lunch money through high school... Truthfully, I have not had much experience with teaching children. I would highly recommend teaching a basic cups and balls routine, as that contains within itself most of the basic principles of magic. Rope magic is also fairly easy to grasp, and can be a lot of fun for young performers. The routines in which the performer tries to teach someone how to tie a knot without letting go of the ends can be fun and teach a lot of principles in magic and deception. The principles you teach should be the ones that come naturally out of the effects you teach. The kids will grasp the principles that they can use immediately, and not have much interest in those that are not directly connected to the magic they are learning. Vanishing a coin or small object is very important, and contains within it all the important lessons in misdirection, timing, and sleight of hand. I know this probably isn't a great deal of help. It's the best I can come up with on the spur of the moment. I wish you the best of luck in your challenging endeavor. |
