I think it is quite real. Rabies is actually not at all uncommon in the wider world.

Cat Scratch Fever can be deadly also, and usually kittens are more likely to transmit it than full grown cats are. We had s small child in our community that died from it. I know a lot about it because I contracted it from a stray cat that came around our house. It was fairly wild, and I tried to catch it so I could take it to a shelter. During the capture one of it's claws went deep under one of my fingernails, and the blood just oozed out. I didn't think anymore of it, but months later I started getting sick. My doctor sent me to a surgeon because he thought I had lymphoma. The surgeon agreed, and set up surgery in just a few days.
Meanwhile, my mother (who knows a lot about medicine) remembered the cat incident, and realized that Cat Scratch Fever can mimic some of the symptoms I was having. She urged me to go check with my doctor again before I had the surgery. I did, and he agreed that I needed to look into it. He set me up an appointment with a doctor of internal medicine. I postponed the surgery and saw the new specialist. At that time they had to send my blood off to the Mayo Clinic to run the test. Sure enough, it came back positive. I stayed sick for months, and to tell you the truth I don't know if I've ever felt the same since. They put me on Cipro but acknowledged that it may or may not help. I just had to ride it out, and luckily I did not have to have surgery and the effects were minimal in me (compared to what it can do). Years prior to all this I had learned "Cat Scratch Fever" on guitar, and my band included the song in our set lists for a long time. It is untelling how many times I have sang it, and I never really gave much thought to what it really meant. Uncle Ted had a little different perception of the term, and because of him, so did I. After having the real thing, I looked at Cat Scratch Fever a little differently! Regan

Actually, gdw, there has been one patient known to have recovered from rabies.

However, it is 100% treatable with PEP as long as it is caught before it reaches the CNS. I used to get bit by a lot of dogs for some *** reason.

That's true, critter. In the United States, our major problem is with rabies that is only suspected when CNS symptoms have set it. That is because of the problem of bat-strain rabies. From the CDC website:
Quote:
For example, among the 19 naturally acquired cases of rabies in humans in the United States from 1997-2006, 17 were associated with bats. Among these, 14 patients had known encounters with bats. Four people awoke because a bat landed on them and one person awoke because a bat bit him. In these cases, the bat was inside the home. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the numbers were even worse, as I recall. Out of about 20 cases of bat-strain rabies, there was a history of a definite bite in only 2 cases, and no known bat exposure in about half. Quote:
Since 1981, 24 people have died from rabies infections acquired in the United States, and 21 were due to strains of rabies virus associated with bats. In addition, case studies revealed that bat bites may go unnoticed or are disregarded as "insect bites." Only 1 of the 21 human bat rabies cases had a documented bat bite, while another 10 involved some retrospective account of contact with bats. Thus, it appears that only 52% of the victims had any known exposure to bats. I've been vaccinated against rabies twice, both times because of discovering a bat flying around my house when I woke up in the early morning. Discovering a bat in a house in which you have been asleep is considered by the CDC to be a bat contact requiring rabies vaccination. I may not have needed the second series, since a titer obtained when I got the first booster shot showed very good immunity. But better safe than sorry. |

Woland, I am very confused by your post. You failed to explain how the rabies problem is attributable to socialist policies and / or the North Koreans.

My wife got cat scratch fever (I got a hell of a bite two days ago from a cat I rescued from two dogs) and it was far more serious than I thought it would be. She got a huge shot full of stuff from the doctor for it.

And all this time I thought Cat Scratch Fever was just an adolescent sex joke from Ted Nugent.
