Thanks Steve!
It's nice to be here. I'll start by saying, in case you are interested in my background, that I am a full time mentalist, which means I create and produce live shows and demonstrations that refer to and introduce the notions of having genuine powers of the mind for entertainment. I write books about mentalism premises and try to improve upon such demonstrations through research and analysis, but I also have written a book for the public that opens up the idea to have the reader test their own ESP quotient for fun and amusement while sharing with the lay-public concepts regarding researched scientific mental process of how the mind might conceive an understanding of ESP. My personal interests allow me to meet and study many serious scientists and scientific researchers who are involved with some pretty existential subjects, and quite simply, I see myself as having a very open mind. Within magic and the mystery arts, I have helped Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger facilitate "Oracle groups" during the early days of Mystery School. I have hosted my own conference, "The Phoenix Gathering" which lasted three years after Mystery School ended (2000 through 2002). The first year featured Max Howard and Harley Newman, the second year was Hiawatha and Jeff McBride, and the third year was Kevin James and Gaetan Bloom. Phoenix Gathering considered itself an "interdisciplinary mystery arts conference" which shared many different approaches to creating a sense of mystery in one's audience. I have most likely studied virtually all forms of magic since an early age, and have performed in virtually all forms of performing venues so frankly, I am fairly qualified to answer most questions, but am happy to admit if I don't know something. I have become, as of of late, a bit of a pragmatist-- whereas there was once upon a time I drove around with a Chevy van full off illusions, assistants and livestock, nowadays I'm more inclined to travel light with only carry-on luggage. Between 2000 and 2004, I became a regular headliner at Caesars Palace in the Secret Pagoda Theater of the Magical Empire, and was by then, a full time mentalist, choosing only to perform "miracles of the mind." Still today, however, I amateurishly create effects that hint more towards a "magical" presentation, such as recently releasing PSYCHO-CHRONETIC which is literally a Back-in-Time premise which can go in either a mentalism direction OR a magic direction (a la the Great P.C. Sorcar). When I use the word amateur, I mean so in the true sense of the word, since PSYCHO-CHRONETIC did end up making it into my professional repertoire. By "amateur," I mean I create effects even when I don't need to. I am also intrigued by the use of hypnosis, NLP, energy-work, and other wellness practices that may create a positive relationship with magic principles (and the arts in general) as its own kind of experience. My personal style has always been in the spirit of referring to stories of having powers of the mind or experiencing strange phenomena while my demonstrations are performed. Personally, TV, I like Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, Mixed Martial Arts, Flight of the Concords... Musically, I'll dance to LITERALLY EVERYTHING, but I come from a post-punk childhood (Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Billy Childish... and have played bass and guitar in at least three DC bands). These days, I like listening to House and Hip Hop as a guilty pleasure, but my XM Radio is pretty much set to Real Jazz. I live in MD outside of DC, I am married to a beautiful woman and have a beautiful daughter, and although some have thought of me as a vegetarian because I do like to eat healthy things (and my wife and daughter are), I will eat practically anything offered to me within reason. What else? Oh yes, last night I got to see the Sean Taylor lecture at Denny's. If you're in Philly tonight GO SEE HIM!!!! Alright, so there's a little more personal information. I ain't that complicated. |

Hey Dave!
Always great running into you, sir! Yea, I bet you have some cool stuff-- you always do! I LOVE being in Denver/Boulder, so the next chance I get, you know I'm there. If any y'all find your way to Boulder, check out all the great street busking and then go eat at the MED! I had lunch there with Todd Lassen last year. Incredible seafood! Alain |

Hi Alain,
What a treat to have you here on the Café. When you were at MindVention a few years ago I learnt much from you... Including how to pack a suitcase. One of the most utilized bits of non magic info I've adopted in many years. Cheers, Tom |

Dave-- re: 4F, I haven't been in a long while, but I would like to go back one day, and maybe next April is when I should think about it, so we'll see for sure! I'm excited to hear about anything cool you and Lassen are working on. That stuff inspires me!
Bob!!! Great to see YOU here or ANYWHERE my brother! I just got to see some pretty gnarly photos of our boy Jeremy-- I'm glad he's checkin' out ok. Tom-- great to hear from you too! Man, I'm sorry I missed Mindvention this year, but the timing just didn't work out. Thanks for remembering my lecture from Mindvention 2009! I ALWAYS have a great time in LV! I'm glad you subscribe to my way of looking at packing. Doug Dyment is the real wizard on that subject, actually, but I can't get away from loving my Tumi pull-man! Alain |

I'll have to hit Todd up and ask him! Thanks for stopping by Dave-- AND if any of you who are reading this ever gets a chance to spend an afternoon with Dave (of which I have done so at least four times), it would be worth it, if just to show you how applications to concepts in general can be unfolded like a giant and infinite mandala! you'll see...

Hi Alain! Did I inadvertently contribute to your being here? If so, I'm glad we chatted and you acted on my suggestions. If not, I'm still glad to see you here and suspect this will be an interesting week.

Hey Alain.
Long way from The Great Foodini. Hehe Good to see you here.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

"The Great Foodini"-- April 1983 - January 1984 may it rest in peace.
Tico Bonomo, of Bonomo Turkish Taffy fame and Time Out Amusements arcade was the main partner during all that. I was a "staff performer." That place was actually pretty amazing and lucky for all of us living in DC at the time as it then competed against Steve Spill's and Bob Sheets' Brookfarm Inn and brought a number of talented cruise ship acts, and celebrity performers into the area. It was there in fact that I met Denny Haney of Denny and Lee, BEFORE the whole place went chapter 5 and we were all out of a job on the same day. Alain |
