Well my chum and magic Café member John Kimmons worked (full-time) as a children's performer, submitted his video to a web-site and now gets flown out to perform on cruise ships.
So if you've got a genuinely funny act I don't know why the OP can't submit a video to one of these sites no matter if he does (shock horror) children's parties or isn't "extremely familiar" with the market. Walt, how exactly does one get extremely familiar with the market if you can't read about it and you don't try it? Why not stop picking at his web-site and telling him he won't be able to do it and give the guys some links. |

George, the way you get the knowledge, the systems, the lay of the land, and the process, is to talk to and pick the brains of the guys who have actually made a career of this or are currently employed doing this. Then you get the real scoop. Otherwise you get brainstorming which can be inaccurate and waste your valuable time, or read books that tend to be out of date, or not give the whole story. Go to the source. At least that's what I think would be a practical way to explore. Walt |

This was A Birthday Magician’s original post
“Can anyone out there recommend a USA cruise ship booking agent that I could send my promo?” Remember he asked for a name, this was what he got. • Since you call yourself birthday party magician I don't think you're the right act for ships. • If you want to entertain kids, try starting off at the Disney Cruise. • A Disney Cruise is not a starting point, but something you build up to once you have experience and know what you are doing. • A lot of getting off at one port and taking a helicopter to the next that is out at see,(Sea) if you miss any of the appointments, they leave you stranded on an island. No money and no way to get back home. • No one helicopters acts around. If you do swap ships in a port the cruise line pays your hotel, They're not going to leave you stranded in a port. • You will not make enough money to maintain an apartment or home and work for a cruise lines, • I have a lovely home and drive a luxury car-all from performing on ships. A Birthday Magician was only asking for a name of an agent in the USA |

Buzz,
I PM'd some to him. Its an agent's call if he or she wants to represent the act. Thing is, with Google, they are easy enough to find on your own. Tom |

I'd say he's been offered some pretty sound advice. I've never understood it when an entertainer asks another entertainer for their agents info or recommendations. Agents are about relationships and an investment in yourself as a business. For most this is a guarded area that they worked hard to achieve and maintain and don't simply share with anyone just for the asking. As Tom pointed out in this day of Google and information at our fingertips, this seems like a very odd request to me on several levels, or perhaps just lazy? I'm not sure. Or is this another case of what has been happening so frequently here of someone would simply just rather ask here in a post than have to put the effort into doing the work themselves to find the info. Working with agents and agencies requires some work on the performer's part. If one is not willing to do basic education and research, how could one expect to achieve any type of success in developing a good profitable working relationship with an agent(s)?

Heck I would NEVER give out that information. As far as I am concerned information like that is not "help". Reason being is that he can burn that bridge if he is not ready.
Plus within pros it has always been sort of taboo to ask that information to a point. Now pros that are friends sure, but someone just walks into the magic shop and says "hey give me the name and address of some agents" (which is the equivilant of what was done here.) was just not done. I don't think peopl realise what they are dong at times.

Great that is a fantastic opinion. As a person who books a lot of acts it screams something to me. Am I allowed my opinion?
Most people who want entertainment simply want to be entertained. If the guy is a part time performer and does a killer show in the end this is what is important. They will not hire an inferior full time pro just to have somoene who is full time. It is a distinction that magicians make.

You book a lot of kids parties?
It is a distinction that magicians make. And nobody else. How this fellow advertises his children's parties has no relevance to his adult corporate act. |

My point is the "full-time" distinction is on his kids party website. Why everyone is judging his ability to play a cruise ship crowd from perusing that site I have no idea.

The guy simply asked for information. It was a politely phrased question. He didn't ask for an armchair critique of his abilities or his show.
Either give him the information or don't. But can you guys let at least ONE opportunity to sermonize and pontificate slide by? It's getting tiresome. He simply asked a question. Who he is and what his entertainment credentials aren't relevant to the question he asked. If he had come on and said "I'm a magician who does kiddie parties. What are my chances of getting onto a cruise ship?" then by all means, give advice on THAT topic. David

If it is so tiresome quit reading. There are those who think guys comming in and asking questions like this is triesome. All he realistically had to do was use the search function.
If someone wants a lecture on how to post and what we are allowed to say then by all means YOU feel free to post on THAT topic. Yea this is fun.

Let him burn the bridge if he isn't ready. We've got no skin in the game. Its not a market either of us is interested in working. I don't work with the agencies I pm'd him. I just gave him some names - he still has to google them for information. My bet is the agencies will make the correct decision after a fast review of his submission - if it doesn't hit the trash or get the delete button first. The problem with most "acts" is they believe getting an agent means sending them a package, the agent will be blown away and the work will roll in. It doesn't work that way. Agencies get 100's of e-mails and packages every day. Its about knowing the business, standing out on-stage and professionally, and developing the relationships Mindpro mentioned. Tom |

I performed on a cruise ship once about three years ago. It was a lot of fun, but I decided that it was not the life-style for me. Since then I have been on several cruises and I enjoy being a passenger much more.
May I suggest that you go to http://www.lybrary.com and download the book "Work on Cruise Ships as an Entertainer and Speaker" by Wolfgang Riebe. This book covers all the details and gives references to booking agents etc. The book is 157 pages, was updated in 2008 and cost to download is $8.00. |

Thank you to 'all' for the advise and comments. I did do a google search for USA agents but they are not as easy to locate as one may think. Upon reflection, and after talking to several guys who currently work on ships...I don't think it is the life for me...I will keep going with my local market which is about 70% kids shows and 30% corporate roving/stage...thanks once again to all of you...for helping me to see that cruise ship work has it's limitations
