I was looking in the video section and was curious if anyone would recommend a video that covers EVERYTHING you need. I was thinking Greg's Complete course in dove magic dvd set. Anyone have any experiance with these videos? As far as tailoring and the whole 9 yards? I already own the Doves 101 video.
Secondly, does anyone in the orange county, or close to this area recommend a trustworthy place for tailoring? I don't want to just to go any ol place and have them screw up lol. |

Derek, many videos cover a wide variety of subjects but there is no ONE video that covers everything. Greg Frewin's is a good resource and so is Tony Clarks Unmasked and behind the seams.
As for tailoring, just look for a tailor or seamstress in your area. Tailors in dry cleaning shops should not be used. You need someone who is strickly involved with tailoring. If you are not planning on doing dove magic full time for a living, you really don't need a tailor. Just follow the intructions on the videos and you can tailor your own clothes. It's a lot cheaper and you know you'll have it exactly how you want it.

I agree with Dave, between Greg and Tony's video you should be able to get a decent education. Greg does his own sewing!!!??? I think sometimes to be a good magician you must be multi-talented. Good Luck!

Haha I think I'm going to find a seamstress... I'm not to talented with that. Actually I was checking out a dove vest from Abbots for only 45 dollars, it says its adjustable to any size. I figured I get get away using that. and then just have to worry about a stiffiner in the coat.
{My 2nd biggest thing is deciding if I want to go for a full tux with tails. I think I want to go for more of a traditional suit, however what I'm really shooting for is Classical, with a new-age twist (ill probably start a new thread for this topic alone).... so I'm not sure where that leaves me at with costuming.} I purchased a book yesterday, Encyclopedia of Dove Magic - Marian Chavez, I kinda skimmed though it, and a lot of the stuff seems pretty dated, ill read it at work today. With the videos, are they pretty dated as well? |

No such thing as "dated" when it comes to dove magic. All of the setups, pockets, loops, and moves are the same now as they were back when that book was written. It's an excellent resources by the way.
If you use a dove vest, that will change how you have your jacket made. You won't need the pockets sewn in. Also, if you decide to go with a full tux and tails, you don't want a dove vest. I personally have a problem with a tux and tails. It is a very formal outfit and unless you are performing in that type of venue, it will be out of place. If you watch most of the magicians today, you'll see that the traditional tux or tux and tails isn't used. I use a regular tux like you'd wear at a wedding or graduation. That type of outfit fits most places. You said you wanted to be classical. Does that mean your act is doves, candles, billiard balls and card productions? If you, you are just like most every other act using doves. You want to be differents. A tux with tails telegraphs "dove magic" to the audience.

Dave does know his stuff! *smile* You have to decide who YOU want to be. The classic tux and tails goes for some, but not for others. Who are you everyday? Are you Classic? Is that your character while performing? do you plan on being classic your entire act or just the dove act? is your act only a dove act or are you doing a dove act for an opening, and then going into something else? Why are you wearing a tux with tails? I don't really want the answers, these are just questions you need to ask yourself is all. Hope that makes sense. I, personally, have a tux with tails, but its not a classic black tux with tails, its a BLUE tux with tails, but what I wear underneath (depending on the venue) makes the difference in why I am wearing what I am wearing.
As Dave mentioned, it telegraphs 'something', and mostly bird act. People associate tux/tails with birds and classical magicians, and then they will associate you with a rabbit out of a hat. That is why I got away from the black tux/tail and went blue....When I walk into a venue (for stage) wearing a blue tux, most people don't know what to think, but they KNOW I am not part of their corporate group, so I must be the entertainment - That's another area. Just decide who YOU want to be is all. I have seen many bird acts with a regular coat, and they are great acts. You can still accomplish the same things, or most of the same things as a tail coat magician, you just have to find what works for you. Many videos available, yes, and they are not "dated" as Dave said because a dove, a living creature, is not dated. *smile* All the videos you listed are great learning tools, and they are to guide you to find your way, not to copy what they do...hope that makes sense. They give you lots a good advice, and a great start in what you need to know, and learn about the animals you are working with, and then you take that knowledge, and put your personality into what you have learned and become YOU. Make sense? *smile* You'll learn lots in the Café, just don't forget who you are while learning....to have a good act, you have to be comfortable in what you are performing in, and comfortable in portraying who you want to be. If you feel comfortable in tails, go for it, if not, don't do it. If you feel comfortable in sport coat, go for it. Only you know the answers to your own questions. Good luck in your quest! I learn everyday I work with my birds and my act, and it never stops! *big smile* |
