I was on another forum, You Ought to Be In Pictures, and somebody shared a YouTube video of James Brown on Penn & Teller Fool Us. Which I will view shortly. But what struck me is how quickly my mind said "...and the Famous Flames!" Because at one time, not so very long ago, there was only ONE James Brown who was anybody, the Godfather of Soul Mister Please Please Please James Brown himself, from whom Mick Jagger copped ALL his steps and Tina Turner quite a few, and I was gonna say something when I realized that no one on that forum would even have heard of the original James Brown or have any idea whatever how important he was in the history of R&B (that's "rhythm and blues"--"What's THAT?") and rock and roll.
So I decided to bring it here, my tale of woe, my attachment for times gone by, and ask you, ladies and germs, who else can you think of who is performing now whose name happens to coincide with that of a great entertainer of yesteryear? |

Wait a second. Please post a link. Certainly there isn't someone else going around these days calling himself James Brown? That would be sacrilege.
Of course, as much as I absolutely love James Brown (I'm a HUGE fan of funk), I think Jagger came up with a few moves of his own. Don't blame James Brown for Mick Jagger. |

I saw James Brown, and the fabulous flames with the Ike, and Tina Turner review at the Uptown theater probably some time in the early 1960. I remember James Brown changed his clothes about four times, and finished his show with "Please, please, please"
His band may have been called the famous flames, but the Georgy Woods the Philly DJ's called them the fabulous flames. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n26-uEU7g0I

I didn't even know there was a James Brown besides the Soul dude.
There is a weird coincidence of top level bodybuilders often sharing the names of football players, Jay Cutler is the most obvious example.

Is it really surprising that there's more than one James Brown? I'd expect millions.
If you google my real name, you'll get a 1925 novel, a sculptor in Cape Breton, and a gun shop in Edinburgh. John

Jim Brown was a running back for the Cleveland Browns.

Here's one of the best James Brown TV performances. (Get a good look at the bandleader about halfway through. And Letterman at the end. Makes me feel old.)

<sigh> I saw Ike and Tina Turner (with the Ikettes) at the hungry I in San Francisco. The late Pigpen from the Grateful Dead was in the audience. That club's name was in fact spelled with no caps, predating the ubiquitous internet and texting on cell phones by some 50 years.

It's "hungry i" with the "i" in small caps...will the Café let me do that if I put it in quotes?
