So I plan on having between 4 and 6 doves and have almost completed building a cage that's 5 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. You think that is big enough for 4-6 birds?

Derek, that will be fine as long as you don't have two males in the same cage. The question of size comes up quite often. The rule of thumb is they must have room to flap their wings in the cage without assaulting the other birds. Exercise is important.

Perches are important as well, You can use wood dowells about 3/4 inch in diameter. Just attach them with a screw on the side of the wire with large washers and the screw though the end. This size will prevent their feet from hurting. Do not put too many on the low side. I would keep them at the same level. That way they will not fight over pecking order as much. The leader always wants the higher perch.
Also a small platform up off the floor is convenient for the birds to set comfortable. Just a piece of wood on some "L" brackets will work. |

Not really a disagreement here but rather an opinion from experience. Perches should be set at different levels in the cage. Doves will not stay in one place for long periods of time and having varied height perches allows them to "fly" up or "jump" down giving them a little exercise. If it gets cold in your area (I mean in freezing conditions) change some of the round perches to flat ones about 2 1/2 to 3" wide. That way the doves will be able to keep their feet out flat and sit on them to keep them warm.

Dave's point is good. Remember that doves in nature spend considerable time simply walking and standing on the flat ground. After all, doves are seed eaters, not hunters.

Ill be doing a mixture of flat perches and different sized dowels so they don't get arthritis in their feet. It doesn't get freezing where I'm from, and they will be inside of a garage. so out of the breeze, along with a chicken water dispenser on the bottom with a cone on the top so they cant poop in it, and then dome shaped cover food bowls so they can stand and poop inside the food either. I thinking about getting all female, and 1 male so they can mate... Is that wise? or do I need to keep my breeding pair separate from the others?

I kept all of my birds together when I had an aviary. The breeding pair was fine in a cage with other birds as long as I only had 1 male. Mutilple males in one cage creates territorial issues.
