I'm not sure where to posts this thread but i have questions that has been bugging me for a while. Why are DVDs more expensive than manuscripts? Production costs? The effort to make the DVD? Honestly there have been a few dvds which cost $25-$30 and they obviously have been made at home.I also feel that production costs for manuscripts might actually cost more to DVDs.
I compared the torn and restored effects on hocus pocus and looked at the price. Ripped and restored and Torn are $34.95 and $29.95 respectively.Resurrexion is $29.95, and it's a computer cd, not a DVD. Torched and restored, a manuscript is $14.95. Reparation Redux, another manuscript which is an IMPROVEMENT of Reparation, is $12.95. But the Reparation video is $20. Ammar's Backward in time, a manuscript, is $12.95, Fusion, by Sean Fields, a manuscript as well, is $12.95. I find this rather intrugueing. I'm not sure how to put it but I think you know what i mean. It really does not make sense. A well-written manuscript could be just as easy to understand as a DVD which costs $10-$20 more. Are DVDS really better? Any thought on this? Thanks!

I can, indeed, tell you about it.
I offer both a DVD and a number of comb-bound books and manuscripts. The cost for the DVD itself is less per copy than the costs of the books--but I had to order 1000 copies of the DVD, while I print the books to order. There is more involved with a DVD--cameramen, lighting, sound, a venue--all cost money. Add to that the cost of the camera rental and the film. Then you have to pay the editors, and then it has to be authored--a couple grand or more for that step alone. Saved on a DLT tape which costs a hundred bucks or so all by itself. Se3nd the thing to the replicator, which costs a couple of grand. Then you have to pay for the shipping costs when it's sent to you--another couple hundred bucks (20 large boxes). I did as much as I could on my own and my DVD still cost me about $7000. My comb bound books: I wrote them on my computer, laid them out on my computer, photographed for them myself, print them to order myself (unless I need a large number for a lecture tour or a wholesale order), and I comb bind them myself. My in-laws own the digital camera, so that costs me nothing, and I already had the computer and printers, so I basically have to pay for the ink and paper, comb bindings (I bought a used comb binding machine cheaply a few years back) and card stock for the covers, and I only have to pay for them as I go. Hardbound books are different--you're looking at an investment of about $20,000 for a run of 1000, which is why they are so expensive (and why I don't have any hardbound books!). So while the MATERIALS cost (the actual disc itself and its case) are cheaper for a DVD (per each one), it's getting to that point and having to buy in quantity that makes them significantly more expensive to produce.

I see! Thank you for your reply! But what exactly is authoring? haha
I was thinking about it. Why can't I do the filming myself in a nice bright room and go home, edit it myself, then send everything to a replicator. Wouldn't that be cheaper?

Sure--if you want it to look like a homemade job done on your camcorder. But you'd still have to get it authored--that's what allows you to go to the part of the DVD you want from the menu. Without that, you might as well just do videocassette, because that's how it would play. Authoring costs a couple thousand dollars. And I wouldn't recommend editing it yourself unless you have extensive experience editing.
Then sending it to the replicator--you're looking at another couple thousand dollars there. So you're still at 3-4 thousand dollars for something that's gonna look like a home movie.
