In Hoffmans treatment of "My Grandmothers Necklace", he uses the word tapes. I take that to mean string. I am interested to know if anyone has knowledge of the usage of the term, or physical item. How was it used and understood in the late 19th and early 20th century.
This is just for personal information, I am interested in the migration of word meanings over the past 120 years. Mulee |

I've heard the term "tape" used for ribbon, but never for string.

True Randi, which I think shows how meanings migrate. Modern use for tape of course, is a sticky substance on a .... ribbon.
In reading Hoffmann, I find I go back and forth from old meanings to modern very easily and enjoy the more poetic prose of the old books. In a world of snippits and soundbits, I like to be reminded there was an more genteel form of comunication that has been trampled in our hurried stampede to........? I try to weave this into my patter. Just wanted to see what others thought. PS. Love the Rabbid. Have a couple myself. |

As with Randi, I always understood "tape" to mean ribbon. My grandmother (who lived to be 100) called ribbons tape. Ticker-tape was so called because it was a long ribbon of paper.

Harry, your grandmother must have gone through many different usages for words in that span. Wonder what she could add to this topic.
Ray Bradbury wrote a piece in the post apocalyptic world in which a old gentelman would sit on a bench and recall things that were long gone. Some found him to be an anoying old man, others a time machine. The thing that got me on this, was in Hoffmanns Modern Magic, the word tape is use and the drawing shows a string threaded on the beads/balls. |

I have also seen the word 'tape' used when referring to dental floss, as per 'dental tape.' In some cultures you may find a fabric of sorts called jute tape, jute being a plant-based fibrous material that is spun and often woven into fabric-type panels for many different uses.
As well as the Modern Magic by Hoffmann, as referenced by Pete, I seem to remember seeing the term used in one of the Tarbell books as well, but I could be wrong. |

'Tape' in England is a word still used for something resembling ribbon - but made of a cloth/cotton type material.
They are still used in my favorite sport - Speedway (motorbike racing) on the starting line for when the 4 bikes line up for the commencement of the race - this is a clip from my local club where I work voluntarily as a speedway bike machine examiner. Fast-forward through to around 48 seconds and listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJdt8_01-......eo_title
