Thank you Eric! We've known we're doing something great for a long time. That's not to say we're doing it justice, just that it's a fantastic project. The next step is turning it into something worthwhile. Hopefully, our documentary/series will have the same impact as these two minutes!

From what I've seen (I haven't seen everything), the interviews and excepts from performers that you have made available on your website (there's a bunch), you all are doing a great job.
Years ago, when I was a kid, Patricia Campbell tried something very similar. Roaming the country one year, she interviewed different performers that she found in the street. Her work culminated in a fine book. With your utilization of the internet, and cheaper technology in general, you guys are doing something unparalleled. Congratulations! |

G'day Nick
That is a great video - It gives a sense of the range of performers out there busking and builds emotion as it goes along. I am looking forward to seeing more. Bob Latta (aka Troppo Bob) |

That's a nice clip there, fellers.
My fav was the 2 guys - one juggling with the other on the right just staring back into the cam. I've got a similar shot of myself and it also came out good. Didn't I see the Naked Cowboy in there? A friend's daughter got her pic taken with him in Times Square. Can't wait to see his interview. I hope he says more than, "I'm the Naked Cowboy!" like in that documentary a few years ago. Perhaps he's pushing his book this go around? How much did you guys spend?

If your ever in Vancouver check out Daniel buxton, best street musician I have ever seen.
we used to work the pitch in Edmonton together (along with Eden and Billy Kidd) he is a skinny white kid who belts out the blues like you wouldn't believe, and cleans up the pitch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2wjjYLGO9I |

Hi All,
Yes, sorry about the drive by. Not very friendly of me! I was contacted by another magician who told me that I should probably take a look at the thread. So, in reply to the above comments — Coincidentally, I am curently sitting next to "Passing the Hat", by Patricia Campbell. It's great, she has lovely quotes in it, and I really appreciate her style. I recommend everyone gets a copy. I'm also sitting next to half a dozen other busking books about busking which are worth a look, including Susie Tanenbaum's "Underground Harmonies" (NYC subways) and Sally Harrison-Pepper's "Drawing a Circle in the Square" (Washington Square Park). In the latter, Sally mentions that she thinks that attractive young women enjoy writing books about buskers because of their natural charms... PM me if you want the full list. Zoobini, I love that the shot of Chris juggling next to the guy staring at the camera was your favourite. Chris was one of the other filmmakers on the trip — that shot was taken to test colour, light and focus for the next shoot. He'll be very pleased. As for TNC, he's a tough guy to pin down for very long. He's a media sensation in NYC, very aware of what his time is worth, a fantastic businessman: did you know he has trademarked his show? He lets people license his act to use elsewhere. Seriously! As for our budget, it came out to a lot in the end. Ten month's travel, the film equipment and site design are the big three, which together come out to more than $110,000. The exact figure reads something like this: $15k fundraising + everything I own (I'm currently living rent free in my brother's attic to be able to afford working on this still). DB Buxton was one of our team's favourite buskers out of the 300 we filmed. You can see our video of him here: https://vimeo.com/38748388 Unfortunately it was nearly pitch black when we filmed him. That shot is seriously lightened in post just to be able to make out his features. Still, the voice is nuts. -- As for "What happened", the film trip ended in December 2011, roughly when we made the original video in this post. It had been fairly traumatic: we filmed an average of 300 shoots in 300 days, took 2 days off, did 1 day of tourism, travelled on far too many 24hr+ busses and trains...the stress of it all made us basically hate each other for a while. A friend works for National Geographic who said that they only ever do three week shoots — more is just too much strain on the crew. Anyway, once I got home from the trip I spent the next 9 months barely leaving the house and grinding my teeth. I still worked on The Busking Project, but not as much as I should have been. Thankfully, I've been more motivated for the last 6 months, and everything's running smoothly again. We're about to relaunch the massively improved website, which I'm sure you'll hear about! Question: is there some way of getting the magic Café to send you an email when someone replies to them here?

Oh, and please excuse the double post, but Granville Island is about to double the price of its license, ban fire shows and require auditions to perform there. GI buskers are organising themselves to respond. So, if you're interested, PM me and I'll give you contact details for the buskers involved. I know that quite a few magicians have passed through there, so I thought that'd be worth mentioning here. The Busking Project was invited to present at the Ed Fringe last year, for which I made this video. The forum I spoke at was titled "Permits and Prejudice". https://vimeo.com/47649453

Nick, thanks for sharing the url of your Permits and Prejudice video. I enjoyed it because it captures one of the hassles street performers have. I also enjoyed it because I don't have those hassles in the places I performer my Street Magic, for which I'm grateful. There is a difference between a law, and the enforcement of it.
The presentation makes the magic.
