I'm trying to design a new biz card and I'm running into a brick wall. Here's what I have so far...
I don't like fonts that I'm using and have searched for better ones, but I think I need a more objective look and am hoping some of you creative folks out there could help me. My main font search engine is http://www.dafont.com but I'm coming up dry. Any help, ideas, suggestions, etc. would be much appreciated! Christopher

When it comes to fonts, legibility is king.
If they have to struggle to read it, they probably won't. The old rule for business card design: Use only one font, no more than two sizes. It's boring but it's worked for millions. |

The photo is great. I'd switch to another font because that one is hard to read, especially when you shrink it down to business card size. But you'll want your logo to match your website and everything else. So maybe hire a graphic designer and replace your logo everywhere. I'm going to do that too. You might want to put your email address on the card too - it will look busier, but it might be worth it since people like to email so much nowadays and they may have already seen your act and may have also seen your site.

Try using the small words as Superscript.
Superscript: Text that is set at half (or smaller) the font height of the text being used and is set above the baseline. Often used for numerials in footnotes and equations and in scientific content. Also called superior characters.. BALLOONS with STYLE by CHRISTOPHER LYLE I am trying to illustrate what I mean by using Caps as the large lettering and the lower case as the Superscript. As you can see it lines up nicely. As for Typestyle .... the rule is usually if you use a unique type use a plain one to offset it. Same goes with San Serif and serif. The photo the black hat make you look like Frankenstein with a flat top. In fact the black shirt with the background and the dark colors at your feet also create strange images. Your head floats and your feet are cloven. If your doing all this in Photoshop by yourself, I would lighten and brighten your photo. Run the wall and floor off the card, darkening the edges give it a creepy look. Increase size of the top type and Super set it so it all fits in a block style. Impact font would be good. I had a card I did which had my hat in front of the type. Made it look 3D. Top type match the red in your tie. Bottom type increase phone # size to make it same width as your website. Drop the WWW's no need now a day. Bottom type match the yellow in your suit. The Bauhaus Type is a little difficult to read. Suggest a serif font Times Roman or Bookman. By the way I was a graphic Artist for many years for a fortune 100 company. I do some side work for friends and entertainers, I charge only $20 per hour. can do it all over the net.

I'd pay attention to the suggestions made by Mark. (I'm no graphic artist but I worked at a magazine for 7 years and all my buddies were.)
I used to be marketing director and even though I thought I knew what I was doing layout-wise, it was always made a thousand times better when my stuff was given a once over by a pro. Also, I might be putting the cart before the horse but I checked out the website and couldn't find any mention of balloon work. Good luck and make sure you let us see the final product. - Rob |
