Greetings! Thought this would make an interesting thread. What is your favorite introduction when you approach a restaurant table to twist balloons? My standard approach is: (looking straight at the parents) "Hi. It's Monday night. Would you like complimentary balloons?" I'm also standing about 1-2 feet away from the table as I say this, or off to the side, as I don't want to invade their space until I gain permission to come to their table.
This accomplishes 3 things: asks permission from the PARENTS to make balloons for the children. lets them know it's a regular thing (every Monday, Tuesday, etc). makes it clear that there is no charge for the balloon. I've received positive feedback that the parents appreciate this style as they don't feel forced to say "yes". If the answer is "no" (rarely) I've not created a huge scene in front of the children. So ... what's your line? |

Follow-up lines include:(to the children)
"My name is Mr. Wes. If you choose a color I'll make something nice for you!" "To get a balloon you have to tell me one thing you talked about in school today." (I'm fairly strict about this. I'll pester them until they think of something) (handing a child my business card) "This is my Mommy card. If you hand it to your Mommy then she can call my Mommy to see if I can come to your party!" |

I like the lines Wes. I am not currently working any restaurant's but if I do I will keep these in the back of my mind. When I do walk around for fairs I usually just ask the child if they would like a balloon. I like the Idea of going through the parent.

"Welcome to _________________!
I'm the Balloon Guy, did anyone want a Balloon hat today?" Kids hands go up "Whoa kids we got to get mom & dad's permission first, my job is to make people happy here" Parent: "how much? ... we don't have cash... " "Total up to you if you would like to tip me ... I am paid to be here. I also take Credit cards on my phone ... no really!" Total rejection : ( NO!!! ..... After dinner "No problem maybe another time, if you change your mind just wave at me!"

Look at parents and say: "Can they have a balloon or are they to old and sharp for a balloon?"
Always gets a laugh... I then go into everything else. |

I once saw this way in an old copy of Genii and used it in my short stint working food joints. The basic idea was that you have to make little triangle fold advertisements for the table. They would be small enough to not be imposing but have a cut in flap that is always folded down. On it you write "Blah blah blah, I'm Blah blah, if you would like a balloon fold the flap up". The folded up flap would be an image (the magician version was shaped like a hat and the fold up tab was a rabbit head but mine was a balloon I was holding).
This is an easy way to find the tables that want you. You don't have to worry about bothering anyone and you can throw your contact info and pics of your favorite designs on it. It gives people an idea of what they may want and your phone number at the same time. Not bad. I can't see much of a downside to it other then initial creation. Just a thought. Dylan |
