I think Michael Close is very original and funny. His Magic routines are also incredible and well thought out. As for boring.....? I would only state that if I was jealous....yeah...he's boring.

SO he does or doesn't teach his Rubik's Bill routine? And these are just reboxed versions of his very very close tapes or are additional tips etc now shared? Sometimes his explanations do seem a bit long but if you want a PhD in magic and theory you gotta put in your time - I like Mr Close's stuff alot! Sorry I have yet to ses him perform in person.

Back to the original post in this long and sometimes arduous thread. If odroj88 means the Workers Series of DVD's then yes they are the original series re-released. There is no additional material on the 4 DVD's than was on the original 7 video series.
However, Mike also has a single DVD out called "Signature Effects". This is a combination of his earlier "Power of Palming" and "Workers" tapes. These are the details:- Workers - Michael Close is truly a magician's magician; but he does his best work on laymen. His reputation is unsurpassed when it comes to killing an audience with mind-blowing magic. Contains: Work on the Origami Bunny * Dr. Strangetrick * The Ring & Shoelace Routine * Dancers at the End of Time * The El Cheapo Magic Club * The Frog Prince The Power of Palming - A Video Treatise on the Art & Craft of Palming Playing Cards, from the basics through advanced palming. You'll find yourself learning techniques in far less time than you ever thought possible. On The Power of Palming you'll learn: The Proper Grip * The Swing Points * Card Transfers * How to avoid "Framing * "The "Pivot Point" Principle * The Erdnase Bottom Palm * The Left-Hand Diagonal Palm * The Left-Hand Peek Steal * The Vernon "Topping the Deck" Palm * The Marlo "Turnover" Palm. In addition, there are performances of two of Michael's strongest performance showstoppers: The Card, the Forehead, and the Salt Shaker and Butte Ox? Two Butte Ox! Hope that clrifies things. BTW Chris, your slight at Shaun and all other UK magicians was innapropriate and uncalled for. Shaun is one of the most talented, funny and exiting young performers in the UK at the moment. He thinks deeper about Magic than probably 99% of the people on this BB. As for the rest of us boring English magicians, don't forget that some of the best plots in magic were invented by us Brits. I only have to name Alex Elmsley and Peter Kane as examples. Finally, it is my experience than most magicians in the USA are anonymous self-proclaimed experts who sit behind their computers all day and have neither the talent or the "chops" to back up their opinion. Shaun Robinson has both in abundance. In my opinion, most US magicians would be eaten alive by typical British audiences.

Power of palming and Workers original tape are great. POP is a serious look at how to palm cards. I really like his detail in all his magic.

I am totally confused by all the various issues/ reissues of Michael Close stuff. I tried to get a vid of POP on eBay recently but missed it.
Can someone tell me where this is available? I could not see the DVD "Signature Effects" (which Martino says contains POP) on his web site. |

The Mike Close DVD series is an absolute must for any close-up worker. I have found more usable material than in any other DVD, tape or book. The Frog Prince, Rubik's Bill, and Dr. Strangetrick kill lay audiences. I admit a fondness for Origami with good reason! I like Close's Imagination Tester as well. It took me about an hour to learn how to fold everthing, but it was worth it. I also liked the concept of the "Unreality Machine" but I would like more streamlined handling and a workable reset. Anybody trying it out?
I would never have learned Aronson's Memorized Deck if not for Close's recommendation. I already knew how to Faro shuffle, but found a good use for it after reading the Worker's series. Oh, Aronson's Histed Heisted was the effect that "killed" my students when I was teaching. Check out Dennis Loomis' version--it's good. The Frog Prince came in a "Close" second (Puns are my weakness). Oh, if you do card tricks for students, be sure they know one card from the other. Teens don't play cards very much. Does Mike have and ego? YES! Does he take himself too seriously?--Yeah, maybe. I don't know many performers who don't have a "well defined sense of self-esteem". Mike Close is expert technician, great story teller, has great jokes, and his routines are meticulous. Above all, they work!

While I think the effects on the tapes are terrific, it is the lessons of why he does what he does that is invaluable to the average magician. I would have to say his thinking has done more to influence my magic than almost anyone in the past 10 years and I've been doing magic for a little over 40 years.

Hey all,
Are the DVD's worth it? (IMHO), a very definate YES! I have had the pleasure of enjoying dinner with Michael Close and not only is he a very funny guy, but a true "thinker" in every aspect of the word. His routines are well thought out, his technique flawless and his routining of effect perfect. What more could one ask than to learn from someone who has been there and done that? Buy the DVD's, enjoy yourself and remember.....its all about the fun. Tony |

I just ordered my set. I am curious to see how they look in action, since I have several of his Workers books.

The Pothole Trick (Hole on business card) is, in my opinion, worth the price of the WHOLE DVD! This gem will not see the light of day, until I can perform this backwards and forwards, so to speak.
Not being familiar with Mike Close, I've only now begun to purchase the Workers set. Knowing what I do NOW, I'm going to own the entire collection. Even if I do not ever USE most of the stuff on the series, it's a JOY to watch! Highly recommended! doug |

I have always been a big fan of Jay Sankey, but I have to say Mike Close's Signature Effects really has a big impact on my thinking of magic, esp. close-up magic. He will teach you the Mike Close's way of doing close-up, which means they are usually flawless as Mike has thought every step through. The man knows he is good and he's not afraid to let the world knows. I think if you don't want to get his 4 dvds Workers right away, you will be satisfied with the Signature Effects dvd as it contains many of his gems, such as the Frog Prince, The Ring & Showlace, El Cheapo Magic Club, and Dr. Strangetrick, etc. It also has The Card, the Forehead & the Salt Shaker and Butte Ox? Two Butte Ox!

Still one of the best collections of airtight routines ever published to the community. I come back to this series for inspiration again and again.
One thing I always wondered about this DVD series, though... Am I the only one who noticed there's a fire alarm that needs its 9-volt changed, and it's emitting a high pitched beep every two minutes or so throughout the entire DVD set? >.> |

Are these fairly heavy on M deck work? I was thinking about picking up from L&L this christmas while they're on sale..

Not heavy, no. There are a few memdeck effects, but it's a very small portion of the overall material.

Many, many, many years ago I introduced Close to Shoot Ogawa. We were all at the bar he was working at the time outside of Lance Burton's theater. We got to talking and I told him how much I enjoyed his books and tapes... yes, they were tapes when I first got them. He proceeded to walk us over to a table near some regular customers. He then did his forehead, salt shaker card on forehead routine to that couple.
It was awesome. The couple was stunned and laughed continually. It was an amazing lesson to watch in real time. Greg
