Im slightly irritated that as of lately my work seems to be appearing on multiple magic exposure sites, and it appears it’s the same person doing it on each site under the same user name……
Code3smith  A whole handful of my effects have been explained word for word on these sites, this seems to be happening more and more, I had this issue about 8 months ago and now it seems to be happening again…… it annoys me that I spend hours and months working on effects to help and drive this great art just for someone to come along take a look and splatter it across sites.  I know this person is a member of this café but not under this name.  Please stop uploading and exposing my effects.  It’s because of this that I have held my effects back, this is how I earn a living and you somehow see its right to expose my work to every tom dick and harry?  Sorry to rant but this is the only place I can possibly get my message across….  All the best  R |

Rus, I know how you feel. Not to be defeatist but there's not a whole lot you can do about it. This is not to say that I don't confront pirates when I find out about them. I do. But I don't have enough time in my day to scour the Internet looking for illegal downloads of my work.
Some people say that releasing an effect as a download is the worst way to do it as it will be more easily pirated. I disagree. Hard copy books and dvds also wind up on torrent sites. There's no "safe" form to release a product. And it isn't just a problem on the Internet. People trade tricks all the time at magic clubs and conventions or just hanging out with other magic friends. One time at a convention, I saw a young guy teaching a group of kids Daniel Garcia's Shade... after he had figured it out from watching the demo online. That's a lot of levels of wrong. But it's not all gloom and doom. There are still plenty of ethical magicians who value magic and people who create magic and want to support them. Also keep in mind that most of these guys who steal material don't do anything with it. They like stealing stuff just to have it. Most of them aren't performers. So while they may download a bunch of tricks, they're certainly not doing them for anyone or anything except maybe a web cam (have you seen some of these "exposure" videos on YouTube? These guys can barely get through the performance of a trick, let alone explain it). So while I hate that my stuff winds up in the hands of thieves, I take comfort in the fact that most of them are pretty pathetic performers who don't really have any use for the information except as one more document to add the their collection. It sucks, I know. And we should call people out on it when we can. But don't lose sleep over it. Most of them are really young and completely clueless. And the older ones... well, let's not even go there. It's not nice to make fun of pathetic morons.

I've probably brought it up before, but the real shame is that (most of the time) the guilty ones are kids. Somehow they think that kind of exposure is okay. And I agree, the quality of the "tutorials" is frightful.
In fact, I just yesterday decided to upload a demo video for a new effect of mine to YouTube under the "Public" viewing option, which I don't usually do if it's an effect I'm planning to market, and within about 15 minutes, I changed the setting to "Unlisted" because of comments that started appearing, including: "tutorial!!! tutorial!!! tutorial!!!, oh my god!!!" "when ur doing the elmsley count I can see you have at least 3 cards ur bringing with at a time. when you put a card in ur pocket I think ur takeing more xD. I have no clue how to do this. mind if you have a tutorial?" If they're not exposing it in a video then they're blabbing about how it's done in the comments section.. It seems like it's impossible to post anything online without it getting attention from the lame wannabe magician realm of YT... *sigh* |

John, I feel your pain. If you post a public video, do what I do, disable the comments. That way you don't have to deal with the stupidity.

Agreed, it is really stupid.
I do think that these wrong - doers should be educated - it is easy for clueless kids to go down the wrong path at first - the ones that don't change are the people that annoy me, and the ones that do change will most likely thoroughly enjoy the proper route of magic - not only is it kind to creators, it is a much better learning enviroment, and so much better all round. I am so glad that I and others are on this path now - I love magic and have loved learning it this way for the past several years. So all those that are doing wrong, please change, you'll enjoy it way more and you are not hurting any creators' feelings or destroying their business. Magic is my dream and I want to continue to pursue this great art... Just my two cents! Kyle |

If you go to my little shop-thingy, http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/uncle90 you can download something called PIRATES for free, it has a pretty easy explanation as to how to get your stuff removed from sites...doesnt take long to do...
there's probably better ways of doing it, but its worked for me...and its free...and can be shared!
I've asked to be banned
