I have mentioned several times on this forum of a profound moment for me in 1995 while attending a Mark Wilson lecture in Los Angeles. He reveled that through his career he spent 80% of his time on the business side of show business. I’ve never forgotten that and realized why had not been success up to that point. I find it interesting to note here that you, David, were in the very same room when I heard this.
Consequently, I attended a Duane Laflin lecture last year. He was asked a question about marketing and was dumbfounded by it. He reveled he spends very little time on business. His time is spent continually improving his show and his talents. Both approaches are obviously successful. What business-to-show ratio made you successful over the years?

Its funny that I was there too!
Mark Wilson spent a lot of time on business because he did a lot of work with TV and companies. So there is a lot of negotiating and promoting. I imagine the Duane Laflin gets gigs through word of mouth. The big answer to this question is: If you have a great show, it will bring in more business. This is huge. Having a great show is always to starting point. Having said that, at my start I did more business side than now. Because now I get 95% of my gigs through word of mouth. So the great show is what gets people talking. Plus - I have done something that Duane Laflin has done too. I have a niche and I am known as the best in that category. Here is NY when parents ask a friend who is the guy to choose, they say Silly Billy. So there is less marketing now. Laflin has a niche (gospel magic) and through word of mouth people know he is the best at that.
