Please go easy on me because I have never visited this forum before. Gregory Wilson carry's this trick in his money clip at all times. I have only been able to find this trick in Tarbell volume 3. All I know about this trick is Greg likes it I'm sure I will like it too. Could someone please tell me what this effect is?

No worries, Al! There are many versions of this effect, and actually, the Tarbell method (as written) is now obsolete if you are using US currency. But anyway, the basic effect is that you have a $1 and a $5; the bills are placed in the spectator's hand slowly and clearly. You then remove [say] the $1 bill (which is clearly seen), but you have the spectator open his hand, and he is holding the $1 bill, and now you have the $5 bill in your hand.
Here is a youtube clip of a modernized performance Hope this helps. The version that I know and use comes from Eugene Burger's Mastering the Art of Magic and is called Twenty-First Century Bill Transposition. |

Thank you very much. The method does not look real magical to me. What happens if the volunteer chooses the $5 bill?

Here is Ammar doing George Hempel's Beswitched, otherwise know as the 5 and 1 transpo. In this version, the spectator does not have a choice. I don't think that's an issue as the transposition is very clean. With the displays used in Beswitched, the effect looks pretty magical to me.

That video was a basic presentation. You could, of course, spice it up to your liking. Essentially the effect boils down to a transposition and possibly a transformation, depending on how you look at it. The spectator *clearly sees that you have a $1, but then seconds later, you have a $5 and they have a $1. |

WOW George Hampel is a good friend of mine, and Ammar makes it look very magical. The trick is on Michael's money magic.

There are ways to get around the "choice" issue so no worries. It is an absolute great effect and one of my favorite close up tricks to perform. It does look very magical and always gets great reactions. You can't go wrong with it. I actually learned mine from Larry Anderson's Jawdroppers video.

I'm too late!
The book "Switch" has a way to revive the Tarbell version: "Things Change", with an interesting presentation of being a con man (taken from E. Berger) Eugene Berger's Last Dollar has a slightly different way to make the gimmick; I think the bills end up examinable but, you won't go wrong with material from Ammar. John

Who made this trick so popular and started everyone doing it was the famous Harry Anderson. It fooled everyone, and boy was every magicians face red, when they found it was published in Tarbell.
Harry Anderson also explains it in his book, it is part of his Comedy Club act when he was touring, oh so many years ago. He has added some features to it and made it a part of his Handcuff trick with a spectator. |

I carry the Noblezada version all the time, it's folded one more time into 8th's where the Ammar version is folded into 4th's making the Noblezada version a smaller, easier to handle packet. You can do this version in a child's or small lady's hand and their tiny hands will cover the bills completely.... not the case with the Ammar version. You can find it on Noblezada's "Money" DVD. Great paper money reference DVD and entertaining as well... plenty of other money material on this DVD.
Here is the link for the instant dowload of the single trick with a video trailer http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/956 but if you watch the site and wait for a day or so the DVD will likely be on sale for about the same amount as the single effect in the Coolbox Blizzard. Hope this helps..... |
