RJE2, I can understand and appreciate your points and perspectives and as I mentioned previously I do get why some may choose not to participate based on the valid points you make. What I disagree with is I never said anyone that is not doing this as their living (full-time for lack of a better term) are or should be "embarrassed". My point was in reality it speaks louder by omittance for those not responding as it could be concluded that they are more than likely not full-time, "I do this for my primary living and source of income", that they are hobbyists or part-timers. My point is when it is your living and career, it rarely takes any thought to answer such a question. They don't seem to have concerns about how they are received. It's what they do, they've more than likely worked hard to get there, and the will not hesitate to say yes, this is what I do for a living. You must remember, magic more than I believe any other type of entertainer, has more hobbyists and part-timers simply due to it's nature and the way most begin in their youth. I do give Tom credit for being the only Hobbyist so far to respond, that's great. The purpose of the survey wasn't to embarrass anyone it was simply to identify. The way things play here is a different situation on another level. As I said in a recent Benji post that has been moved, I think how members look, act and respond to certain posts and issues here does have a lot to do with their level in the business. Full-timers take things more personal and to heart as this is their living, their industry. The things and issues are often taken more to heart and seriously. Whereas Part-timers and Hobbyists may not be concerned with important industry issues, trends, and developments. They don't think about entertainers health insurance, how it is for entertainers to get a mortgage or car financing, perhaps liability insurance, the state of touring and sponsorships, ethic and content, associations, legalities, and the overall state of the industry. They typically approach things only as it pertains to them and their immediate situation. This of course can be a point of contention here within some of the posts and subject matter, which I believe is the point of the this type of board. I do have some issues and concerns regarding this but that is a separate thing that has nothing to do with this thread or purpose. Thanks for your perspectives. |

No I'm not so concerned about income levels or other facets such as single married, living with parents, etc. But rather, is this your primary career and source of income - your living, or just something you do for secondary income, fun or a hobby? Some are responding that they're "part-time" with aspirations of becoming full-time at some point in the future". That's great, they would respond "Part-time" which is what they are now at the point of the survey. Some do it just for fun or to volunteer but are not concerned with income or pay, or may have never performed for anyone other than themselves or a few close others, they would simply respond as "Hobbyists". Yes, I know plenty of part-time performers that make more than full-time performers due to either another primary job, a spouse (or both), a wealthy inheritance, etc. Seems like many are trying to read more into this or let their minds take them in an off course direction (I know, kind of common here at the Café). They survey could also be perceived as "Is this your living", "For secondary or extra income", or "Just for fun and an interest", but I thought using the three terms or categoories FT, PT or Hobbyist would be easier. |

I didn't want to make a big deal out of mine because I thought he was the tax man.
But seriously, it did appear from the beginning that the survey wanted a single answer. Most probably don't like having to give such a short answer. It sort of locks them in. For some, like myself, it's impossible to describe yourself in one or two words. Magic has been my hobby for more than fifty years, I've also performed magic full time and part time at some point in the past. So I actually could claim all three. Most on here are hobbyist and part timers, that's no secret. I would guess probably ninety percent? While we admire and respect the full timers on here, it's the little people like us that keeps the forum going. This is not a place for professionals only. Everybody here is important and every members opinion should be welcome. We all love magic and we just come here to chat about it, and having a few caring pros sprinkled in acting like regular people is just the icing on the cake. Mindpro, I still have no idea what the survey is really about. But if it's to find out how many full time pros are on here. My guess is about ten percent, maybe even less. Part times that actually does shows now and then, maybe as high as twenty five percent. Just a guess. Hopefully more win report in for you. Tom

I have found that there are many who claim to be full time, but are not. Their pride will not let them admit it. 2. There are many part-timers and hobbyists that will not respond at all….also because pride. And its all so silly. Personally, I feel the designation of full-time, part-time, hobbyist has very little significance. Some of the people that I respect most when it comes to knowledge and passion for magic are part timers or hobbyist. That’s my humble opinion, but I’m interested to see where Mindpro is going with this.

Full-time professional.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
