Yup, moronic.
Although I suspect the triggers to be more than just about football/soccer. Sad though. RIP to those departed.

I agree with Pakar that the triggers are more than just soccer.
But soccer does have a way of bringing out violent tendencies more than other sports seem to do. Purely anecdotal evidence: the potential for violence at European soccer games is palpable. The police presence is truly astonishing: hundreds and hundreds of police in riot gear. Thousands of the fans arrive in an obviously intoxicated condition (something I assume was not playing a role in Egypt). The whole atmosphere is tense, electrifying, and very exciting. It's nothing like cricket or baseball, that's for sure. My point is that when underlying tensions start to surface, the soccer stadium is incendiary in a way that a baseball stadium is not. I'm not sure why this should be the case, and I have no empirical evidence to support my point. But the first time I ever attended a professional soccer game (an event I reported right here at the Café), I found it exhilarating. It doesn't take a very large leap to get from exhilaration to mass panic or violence, I suppose. |

Foolish people do stupid things. We should have more soccer games that way it will help thin the herd of dumb people.
