Some of us are professional magicians, others only hobbyists.
But I'd bet that most of us have performed a trick or two to accomplish some specific social goal. To smooth over an otherwise rough situation, maybe. Or for some other reason than to merely get money, merely pass the time, merely (!) impress someone of the opposite sex, or merely ingratiate yourself generally to someone. For example, I lived for a while in State College, Pennsylvania, but I was about to leave town for good, headed to Boston. I was hanging out at my usual restaurant, and the owner and I were getting all misty-eyed and sentimental at my impending departure. He suggested that we go to the bar next door and get a drink. I explained that I didn't really drink (... a problem I have since remedied), but I'd be happy to go hang out. The problem was that I didn't have an ID on me, and bars in this particular college town were extremely strict on that requirement. But, I had a deck of cards. We walk in to the bar (... which was empty; mind you, this was at like 3:00 pm). The bartender knows my friend, but not me. As the bartender looks at me and says, "Can I see some..." I spring the deck of cards I have in my hand. The bartender never did finish his sentence, and just stood there mouth agape. I seize the initiative, and ask "Want to see something really amazing?" "Sure!" So I sit down at the bar and do a version of Triumph, and in less than five minutes the bartender was asking what drink he could buy me. Afternoon salvaged. |
