Hi everyone, I'm new to the Café so if this topic has already been discussed in detail, please direct me to the thread.
I'm an pro magician that cut his teeth in the children's entertainment industry. I want to start doing bigger illusions and I need some building advice. I have ideas, plans and even a pretty descent woodworking background. I have the tools. I'm looking for advice from successful illusion builders as to what materials are most durable, cost effective, and visually appealing from the stage. Any good resources on the "how to" of construction would be most appreciated. What materials work best for a hollow table to provide safety without bulk? What is the most cost effective/durable way to finish a piece? I would love to benefit from the experience of others and welcome any help you guys can give. |

Rand Woodbury, Paul Osborne, Jim Steinmeyer, Mark Parker... these are the primary names you'll run into when looking for illusion construction books. Some of these (Esp Woodbury and some Osborne) take you from the very basics of woodworking and fabrication. Good luck!

A note about the Osborne Books:
Some of the illusions when built are a little bigger than the average size person would need. There have been enormous advances in fabricated materials since these plans were written. Consider strength vs. weight when selecting materials. Having said that, the plans are excellent. I have built crystal casket, sub trunk (5), tip over trunk, and a cube appearance, also a cremation from the plans. One IMPORTANT THING: building your own illusions ALWAYS takes more time, energy, and cost than you will believe. I hope that you are an experienced builder! If not, the dollars you save may well be better spent buying a reliable prop from a reputable illusion builder. All good luck!
I am whatever I am to you.
