Hi, my name is James and I am a big fan of card and ball manipulation. Looking to gain more knowledge of this art form. I use manipulation cards and have been working with Bee (red back) cards as well. I have one DVD from Jeff McBride and I have "The Sheridan Course in Card Manipulation" by Jeff Sheridan (Awesome stuff)I also have three (3) sets of Fakini Balls [1 3/4 size]. Magenta, white and Golf ball. I have Levent's Ultimate Guide to the Billiard Balls (3 DVD set)as well. I know some things about both and practice when I can. I am looking for any help guiding me in the right direction in finding some books that might have hidden items that may help push me where I need to go next. I need to start getting a routine but not sure how or where to begin.
Thanks to all that respond. Looking forward to being apart of this community.

Welcome James!
You can ask a question here and get responses from some of the best magicians in the world. Or I might answer. Sometimes people looking for guidance post a youtube video and listen to the critique. |

I suggest you get all the manipulation DVDs and books, learn all the moves in the subjects you are interested in. Then as you learn everything very well, you will start to see how different tricks and moves work together in you mind.

That is exactly the book I was going to reference. It has suggestions for compiling a routine in the last chapter. Although, today many things have changed in presenting manipulations because of venues not being available as in the old days, like nite clubs. Even if you do get a nite club act, you will be put off the stage in front on the dance floor. This makes traditional presentation very different.
I also suggest you get the Shamada manipulation DVD. You will see some new positions and methods. Just don't watch it, but analyze each section. Study each section. Many a a member has come on the Café and asked where some move is available. Well, many times it is hidden this DVD. Changing hand position, can make a move look different, but it is still the same move, just higher or lower or in front of the chest. I suggest you always carry a deck of cards and a billiard ball with you. Handle them when you have a quiet moment. If you can use to scheduling a practice time every day, this would put you above most manipulators. Also spend some time reading some of the posts in this section of the Café on manipulations. You will gain some other avenues to think about. |

There was an interesting book written in four languages called "Card Productions for the Stage" written by Cirs and Nop. I don't know if it's still available anywhere, though. I got my copy from Viennamagic in Austria
but I don't see it listed on their website http://www.viennamagic.com/inside_store/site_willkommen.php at the present time. I know people might ask: "Why recommend an out-of-print book from an obscure company?" My answer is that you never know when serendipity will act in your favor. I wanted to find a hardback copy in French of the Robert-Houdin book _Comment on devient sorcier: les secrets de la prestidigitation et de la magie_ (_Secrets of Prestidigitation and Magic_) and actually found one at a French bookseller's website and ordered it. (I don't speak French, but at the time I was researching Robert-Houdin's quote about "A prestidigitator is an actor playing the part of a magician" and I wanted to get the original French quotation to compare it with the English translation.) Regards, Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Sonny, never heard of that book. Does it have anything interesting in it?
------------------------------------------------- Now, I have to suggest keeping yourself fit, to appear in front of an audience. 20 Jumping Jacks 20 Push ups 20 sit ups 20 Eight count push ups 5 minutes of arm spreads run or fast walk 2 miles 3 times a week. Repeat the above as your body strengthens. These will strengthen your body to display and hold props in the correct positions for presentation. |

As for the cards and ball with me...never leave home without them. I don't want to mess up my Fakini balls so I found a kids rubber ball about the same size and I use it when I'm away from home.

Where to go! It may be time to think about steals and gimmicks to assist your manipulation, and make it more magical.
Costume is very important as well, it does not have to be formal in any way, but it must fit your style of presentation and personality. Well fitted and not sloppy or wrinkly. I think you should have gotten some ideas for routines from Levent Billiard Ball videos. Again, spend some time studying the videos. When I watch a routine, many times I shut off the volume, as then watch the routine. It helps you see things that are missed by distraction. Also, do not judge any of the material you glean until you have went through the move yourself. Experiment with it all first. This is one reason I dislike videos, because they are very time consuming, time better spent on practice. You can read a move faster then watching it over and over on a screen. Videos are better to enhance the written material. |

If you study and get creative, maybe you can do a well as these artists.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBRauPQWi......aynext=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hT0xygGw......A576BBC1 I think the girls are showing up the guys, when it comes to skill and creativity. I would like to add that these women have specialized in these acts. This is kind of the extent of there manipulation ability. The 1st video is highly influenced by Shamada and his work. The second girl is also adapt in card manipulation. So I guess they had professional mentors that helped them develop these acts. But they stayed on with it until it was perfected. No one gets tried of watching a good performance a second time around. Many professional magicians say to only learn what you will use. Let all the other stuff alone. I believe this is just another way of saying to stay on track with your goal, don't let yourself get side tracked with a lot of other magic you will never really use. By all means expose yourself to as much as you can, but if it does not appeal to you, then forget it. If it does later, you will have the resources available to learn it. |

I forgot to mention, the new books out "Roy Benson by Starlight" and "Cardini: The Suave Deceiver". These books explains their acts and much more. They are hundreds of page thick and both cost $150.00 each. So save your money or tell your wife you these gifts will prove her love to you Valentines Day.
Another book is "The Magic of Alan Wakeling", it was in hardbound in the early 1990's and was published in paperback on the general market, but all copies of both are out of print now. So only available on the 2nd hand market at outrageous prices. |

Well, I'm now waiting on "Expert Manipulation of the Playing Cards" I hope I picked the right book. I have spent lots of money on things I do not use. Trying to stay away from that. I spent some time trying to be a close up guy which I found just ain't for me. Don't get me wrong I like to do some of those tricks but card manipulation is why I do magic in the first place.
wmhegbli, thanks for the help so far. It's nice having people to talk to or ask question about the things that interest me. I have one friend I can talk to in person about magic, only thing is he does not do manipulation. He's wanting to work with ball manipulation but we haven't got together on that yet. May be soon...
