I wasn't sure where to post this question but I figured that it happens here most, so this is where I will put it.
Why do people get so annoyed when someone asks a question or posts a topic that has already been discussed. For the most part, everyone is very friendly here at the Café and always willing to help. However, if the topic was discussed before, somone always writes "this topic has already been covered many times". So what? Who cares if we cover something over and over? If someone asks a question, and someone else wants to answer it, let them. If you have already read a post on the topic, don't respond to it. It's no big deal. So, here is my question to the people who don't agree with what I am saying. Why? Please tell me. I won't be offended if you tell me I'm wrong, I just don't understand. |

I do it so the poster, who is obviously interested in the topic, can look through past comments and learn more on the subject. If I'm in a good mood, I even do the searching for them. I don't think there's any more to it than that long-time members would like newer member to be able to take advantage of the search function, which is an invaluable source of knowledge. On the other hand, if there is a current topic already on the issue then it's an unnecessary waste of space to have two.

Because your question might have already been answered. In other words, some nice people have taken the time and energy to write thoughtful and insightful tracts on your very question, and it doesn't take too much of an effort to do a search. Even if it wasn't specifically for "you," it is for the benefit of all of the readers of the forum. If you are actually interested in the information, searching is the best way to get it.
But some people on internet forums are interested in the ego boost that comes from a lot of people answering their initial post. If you aren't on the boards for information, but rather for some sort of psychological gratification, it's only natural that the helpful people who are giving you answers feel a little betrayed by the post and react angrily. There is a wealth of questions, information and opinions in magic, and it shouldn't be so hard to come up with an original topic that people will respond to without rehashing old territory. Bill |

Daniel,
Don't let those who insist that you are naughty for not finding all the previous posts on a topic before you ask a question get you down. There are many others willing to chat, and even to revisit old territory. Steve

It is simple ettiquiet(mispelled of course)...
This board is *extremly* well behaved and moderated. If you are internet-savy, it is not uncomming to goto message boards and seeing 90% of the topics the same thing... Don't troll, and always search before you post. Especially when you aren't talking about philosophical discussions, but instead things like "What is a TT" or "Are there any good tricks you can do with a regular deck of cards"... These are topics that have been well discussed and answers can be found simply by doing a search. |

I think THIS topic has been covered before but I'll answer again anyways. (If you met me in real life you would know I'm a real smart a**). I think the problem is that people who have been part of this site for a long time get tired of answering the same questions over and over.
I on the other hand, being a relative newcomer, don't mind seeing questions that have been asked before because I might not have been around when they were first asked. Also sometimes the search engine can give vague results producing multiple topics that really have nothing to do with your question. I think as long as you've done a search first and your question wasn't asked last week most posters won't have a problem revisiting the topic. |

I can understand not wanting to rehash the same old thing over and over. But I've also seen new users under 50 posts get snotty and tell the questioner "This has been covered. Do a search."
And then there are the things that need to be rehashed. Opinions and philosophies change in this forum as more and more new members come in. I think it's healthy to drag out an old rug and beat the dust off of it. So, I guess I believe that there is a gray area here. Where abuse is found on both sides of the fence and the lesson is that these kinds of things happening are just part of internet forums. A good point was made earlier. This IS an excellent and well maintained forum. Go check out any other magic forum. Penguin's, for example. And just look at all the bashing and trash-talking and ridicule and posturing that goes on there. Yes, yes, I know. Free speach and all that. But the biggest lesson that the anonimity the internet gives us is so readily and easily abused. It's nothing for a little nerd to talk like a 6 foot bada**. Quite frankly I pleased to not have to put up with that here. And this includes people with a penchant for repetative questioning and the angry snap attacks from impatient old sea dogs. So to answer the original question, yes, I have noticed it, but only to a degree. And IMHO, it is a degree to which we can all live with and by comparison, could all be proud of. <--- here, have a bunny. |

The Magic Café has a limited amount of server space available. When people keep asking the same questions over and over and receiving the same answers, this takes up valuable space which could be dedicated to new topics. It's fine to ask questions if you've searched and not found an answer which suits your particular needs, but many people do not even bother to search the archives first before asking. While some people may simply be annoyed by seeing the same questions asked repeatedly, there is also a valid, technical, official reason for the objection.

Well, there you have it. That's a valid answer.
And makes perfect sense. Thanks Paul! |

Fair enough. I didn't think about the server space issue. I just thought people were getting annoyed at seeing the same questions. As always, I have learned something new from chatting at The Magic Café.
