I bought a sawing in half illusion from e-bay. It's in good condition for the most part, but the blades are extremely rusty. What should I use to clean and polish them? They are made out of aluminum.

Aluminum rusts BLACK.. so it there's brown rust.. they're not aluminum.
Regular steel wool and some elbow grease should get them clean. |

To be completely correct, aluminum corrodes. Only ferrous metals rust. Try adding some WD-40 to the steel wool. It will make the job go faster. You can also use Scotch Brite pads that are a little more aggressive than steel wool, or even use SOS pads. A good coat of paste wax after they are shiny will help keep them that way.
Another, more expensive way to go about it is to purchase a good rest removal & protection system from a woodworking shop like Rockler or Woodcraft. These products are designed to remove rust from the tables of woodworking equipment and keep it from coming back. Worst case, take them to a plater/polisher and have the polished out and/or replated.

It also might be cheaper (as time is money) to go to a metal supplier who may have "cut offs" and will cut those to size for you to match the current blades. Then just drill matching holes for handles and switch handles to new metal blades.

I once had a Zig Zag with the blades made of Masonite, covered with shiny silver mylar. Never rusted.

The sawing blades I know of are actual band saw blades that have not been tempered. I believe you can only obtain them from a manufacturer of band saw blades.
I had a friend that made a Harbin Visible Sawing, and that is what he did to get a blade for his illusion. It was sold to the late great Karroll Fox, where it is now is anybodies guess. |

I thought Jason was talking about Thin Saw type blades, not really sure. But regarding that Harbin Sawing, I believe Mark Tripp had it, then went to Jeff Hobson's wife (Diamond sisters) and now belongs to a friend of mine in the Detroit area. He's always tried to find out who made it as it is made very well. Could you PM that information to me so I can pass it along. Is he still around as it might need some TLC. Thanks, Mike

It is a thin sawing blade. The illusion was made by a theater prop bulder/hobby magician from the Osbourne Illusion plans, and I bought it from him on ebay. This is my first illusion. The illusion itself is in very good condition.
I think he used sheet metal. It is corroding, but I think it's best like Vinny suggested and just have the metal replaced. Thanks for all the advice on the blade issue. You guys are awesome! |
