I wonder if Walter B. Gibson included his routine in his _Complete Encyclopedia of Close-up Magic_.
http://www.hanklee.org/email%20images/bk01846.jpg Although we don't ordinarily think of the billiard ball routine as "close-up," Walter not only included it in his encyclopedia, but featured it on the cover. Are the hands in all the photoillustrations Walter's? ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Haven't done billiard balls in a long time, but just recently got a set of 2-inch wooden balls from India, and looking forward to revisiting Walter Gibson's routine from the excellent "Classic Secrets of Magic" by Bruce Elliot. I used to do this routine a lot as a teenager, using a set of 35mm wooden balls from Germany. It's direct and very practical.
The Elliot book is now available as a PDF from the Conjuring Arts Research Centre, as are the two volumes of Expert Billiard Ball Manipulation by Burling Hull, which I had been seeking for many years (just bought these today). Two other good source that haven't been mentioned so far are "Routined Manipulation 2" by Lewis Ganson (it has a long chapter on basic billiard ball technique and two routines), and "It's Easier Than You Think" by Geoffrey Buckingham (saw him lecture in Montreal when I was about 14, unforgettably elegant). I can second the many recommendations of Mark Wilson's "Course in Magic" and Henry Hay's "Amateur Magician's Handbook", but very useful resources for all kinds of magic as well as billiard balls. So I'd start with the Gibson routine or the one from Mark Wilson or Henry Hay, and branch out from there. |

The routine I use is basically Al Leech's routine.

Started with a tiny red set from some mail order outfit that I ordered when I was 7 or 8. Moved on to a German made wood turned set and that routine was based upon Chavez/Neil Foster routines. Finally went with Fakini 2 1/8" sets and the routine has elements of Chavez, Foster, Wakeling, Garcia with just a touch of some styling that I remember seeing Ger Copper present.
Oddest story would probably be back when I attended college and I toured with the college choir. On selected dates, I would step out in front and present some manipulative magic-audience in front and choir directly behind me. After the last date I did this, my good friend in the choir (who had seen my act from the front many times) commented, "I'm even more amazed now, how can you get your fingers to do all that..." I was very flattered considering he was an accomplished Pipe Organist! Thankfully, the rest of the choir really did not have a clue what was going on... |
