Hi Frank, I understand fully what your getting at. Who am I? I am very personable and fun individual, I love meeting new people and socializing. I have worked in sales and am very self-aware, often others will tell me I could charm the pants off a nun and make anyone laugh. I drive my wife nuts by often engaging strangers in conversation and love Japanese Stake house's because you get to sit with different people. I am a wonderful and empathetic listener. All and all I am the life of the party, but not because I'm drink and acting stupid but because I am fun and engaging.

Also the reason I ask about the effects is because I'm not worried about my ability to have fun with the customers or interact appropriately but of not truly wowing them. More or less am wondering about other performers use of these effects in the real world and any input they might have.

Great! in that case, go with your gut feeling and learn as you go.
Best of luck out there! BTW, A lot of pros will tell you to "have all your ducks in a row", "have your transitions down pat", "know your sets by heart", blah, blah, blah... Great advice but I'm guessing that all those same pros just learned on the fly, like you're about to do. Don't sweat the details right away. Just get out there and realize that your personality is your best prop. When you're back home, take notes, and learn from your mistakes! That will make all the difference. Tell us how it goes for you!

I don't think it's really necessary to have specific "sets" when doing strolling. Stand up....parlor...yes, of course. Personally, I have openers, middles, and closers. When I approach a table, I know what I'm going to open with, and I have an idea of what I think will play well for that particular table for a middle and a closer. Howver, while I'm performing my opener, I'm reading the group to see what will play for them. So, even though I have an idea of what I think will work, I'm prepared to call an audible and adjust. The transition when working close up is just being engaging and personable. Talk to them.
I love your confidence. You'll do great. let us know how it goes patrick |

OK Here's the update.... First off let me tell you that back in January I was injured at my day job and have been out of work recovering since, hence why I have been able to supper practice and rethink my employment options. Today I was going to go stop in at the local restaurant/bar and talk with the owner but I had a check up for my injured ankle first. The check up went horrible and I found out I need surgery and will be off my feet for at least 10 weeks after. So no real point and stopping and talking to the owner when I wouldn't even be able to perform for almost 3 months. All well more time to practice and perfect my craft. Maybe in July I can get my strolling Magic going.

Between the tricks, the spectators will be laughing, talking, asking you questions, burping, .. you have a LOT more time on your hands that you think you will. In fact, that's the easy part. The smooth transitions and flawless set creation will create itself as you work. Also, don't pack your pockets with everything you can think of. Just use a few things and don't try to do too much. If you have an interesting, non-embarrassing personality and know a few tricks, you're way ahead of the game. And do your spectators a favor.. don't act like a magician. Just be yourself.

In addition to what Frank mentioned, pocket management is important. Put the same things in the same place...logically. No fumbling, stumbling, muss, or fuss (unless it's an intentional ploy to secure something while dipping both hands in the pockets).
I need a marker? without thinking, left hand reaches inside the jacket to the inner jacket pocket. Medium point black sharpie is next to the red frixion pen, which is next to the fine point black sharpie marker. I don't even need to look away from the spectators. Lighter, cards, coins, etc. are always in the same place. If something new goes into the mix, I have to think how it's going to be arranged and retrieved. Hope your surgery goes well!!! patrick |
