It is possible to perform ID as an opener; however, an ID routine can EASILY be built into a very powerful routine, making it more suitable for a closer. If you have a powerful routine and use it as an opener, your other effects right after better be more powerful or spectators may not feel interested in the "weaker" effects compared to ID. I really enjoy Bill Malone's ID routine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1U8xf8Jmdo It is the best one I have seen so far

Hi Extremeninja1 I guess it really depends on a number of factors, including the nature of your overall performance and what you're presenting to the audience in your show.
I will typically incorporate the ID as an out for a routine rather than just performing the effect 'as is'. Paul Brook has an excellent version that I've adapted and use to great effect. Then again, I'm using the ID as part of my mentalism act rather than a card-oriented magic routine... Just my 0.02. E |

Probably best to use as a closer.

I would use it as an opener only, if I could ensure to end clean. changing decks WITHIN the routine is find, ending as an opener having that deck and not being able to do anything else with that deck -> no. If I would find 1-2 routines where I could a few cards of the ID without destroying the order or give away the secret this would be an option as well.

John Guastaferro has a killer routine called Invisible Opener. It is in his new set of notes "Ready, Set, GuastaferrO". I agree with Aaron, Guastaferro's ID routine is great and well worth checking out. If you plan to perform more than one card trick in your set, it makes much more sense to open with ID than to end with it. This is far more logical than introducing a second invisible deck later on (why are you using an invisible deck when you have a real one?). Marty |

Stage shows-ID also works well in the middle of a show with lots of comedy & audience interaction.....

The ID is too powerful to be an opener in my opinion. Warm up the crowd first and get them interested first. Perhaps before you do the invisible deck, do some tricks with an identical but normal deck to allow the spectators to look at to get the idea that you are using a normal deck of cards in their mind. Then, put the deck away and do a non-card trick such as EB or Pressure. (If you don't know what pressure is, try looking it up on youtube) After that is complete, pull out the invisible deck and your audience will automatically assume that it is the same deck they were just handling. Of course, their are other ways of doing a deck switch, but this is the probably the easiest way to swap out decks. Just put it away and do something else for a bit.

Thanks for the thoughts. I really like the idea of the ID as an out for a trick gone bad.

I use jumbo cards, producing the deck from a drawer box.
