Hi Guys
Just wondering, if any of you guys have ever opened with a business card effect in a strolling / table hopping set. If so, what have your experiences been like? Likewise, if you are against this, please comment on why you feel this way. I am asking as I am adding another set of 3 effects to my walkaround repertoire and am trying to decide upon an opener. I know from experience that the only way to truly find out is to test things out on real people and audiences, however hearing from others always helps as well. Oh and if you're wondering, my reason for adding another set of 3 is because I currently have 2 sets of 3 and want to add a bit of variety to my act and also have a new set to show repeat clients. Many Thanks As Always For Your Help. |

It wouldn't hurt by doing a magic trick involving your business card after you have performed for them and have done a good job with your performance.

I really like opening with a variation of Hot Leads. I ure it to introduce myself at the table, and it works well with my cards as they have an asymmetrical ambigram on them whic spells my name one way, and "magic" the other.
Also it just grabs their attention and let's then know what you do up front.

I use Sneak Preview to open with, I use the line, many people love to have a dinner and a movie, tonight you get a dinner and a magician, then I go into the routine...I write the movie on the back of one of my business cards that I then give to them as a momento of that effect...

Thanks for your opinions and ideas so far, they are all really appreciated.
Terry, nice patter and ideas for a great effect. I was originally thinking of an out to lunch or signed signature transposition style effect, however as you suggest a nice mentalism piece could prove to be very strong. |

When I designed my business card- I designed a reveal into the business card so I always have a reaveal available for leaving them with a fun reveal and a momento.
I highly recommend you look into Moo Cards. For no extra cost- you can get 50 business cards and if you take the time to design your own like I did in photo shop- you can print as many as you want with deferent reveals. (example: 25 with a 5H reaveal and 25 with ace of hearts OR 50 with a different reveal on each) This is great if you have more than one person in a group who wants a card and you can get a couple of reveals. Heres a link to check out the site. http://www.moo.com/share/stczfk
I've been training these cards since they were small.

I HAVE opened with a business card effect. It was my friend, Shaun McCree's effect, from his lecture notes that he gave to me, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the effect.
I personally found two problems with using a business card as an opener...1. In hindsight, it was more of a middle effect and not really an opener. 2. I can't really say that people seemed to frown upon the use of a business card early on but it did seem to stop them from asking for a business card. As to audience reactions...they didn't really say anything nor did it prompt them to ask me for a business card BUT, when I used a business card as a middler or a closer, I did start to get asked for my business card. Hope this helps. |

Thanks seeker, Martin and Joey for the ideas/suggestions. I will definitely look into the effects that you mention.
Martin, You raise some interesting points that are worth thinking about. Although I do have one comment and that is if the effect that you started with leaves them with a business card in there hand, then perhaps that is the reason that you were not being asked for a card because you had already given them one through the use of an effect from get go. However, if the effect didn't leave them with a card then, perhaps the thought they were part of your act and didn't want to ask because you had already put them away. I'm not saying that the above is correct, however I would be grateful if you could shed some further light on the matter. Many Thanks |

Having an awesome business card trick is great, since one always business cards when doing walkaround. But I wouldn't open a set with a business card trick. I've got a few that I really like and I use them as stand alone pieces once in a while or sometimes as add-ons during my usual sets. Most of the time I simply hand them out at the end of a set. The million dollar bills that have been personalized with business info are nice as well.
