Hi Guys
I started this review thread so that things are posted in the right section of the Café. My new e-book was announced in the Latest and Greatest section (you can look there for details) but I also noticed a review posted there which I have copied here: Quote:

Purchased 'Wisdom Begins In Wonder' direct from Andrew's web site (www.andrewmurray.biz) and although I've only scratched the surface of the material - and there is a lot of material in it - it looks to be one of the best books (e or paper) that I've bought.
35 routines are explained in detail. Techniques used are detailed and credited, altough as a relative beginner I could have used a few more photos (and look forward to the DVD). There is none of the "padding" that seems to dog some productions. There are some classics given a fresh working (&technique - Reset, a neat transposition) and many new (to me at least) plots. If you're into card magic then go get yourself a copy. It's a cracker.... Martin |

Thanks for the review Martin. I have just received this from Steve Jones in Dubai:
A 124 page 2012 pdf booklet mainly ion card routines by Andrew Murray MIMC. The contents include 8 unpublished routines and collection of 27 previously published with updates. This extract from the preface is a fair summary of the content and what to expect: The routines presented in this collection are the result of thousands of hours of thinking, shaping, perfecting and ultimately performing. While I do not claim originality for the premises, I do take great pride in delivering classic plots in a deceptive, efficient and intelligent manner. For those looking for new sleights a few less well known ones are covered and there is a 4 of a kind production and a cold deck false cut , colour change and sn in the hand multiple cut is explained. The material includes some well known plots e.g. ’Reset’ which are detailed with the author’s handling and nuances. Most of the effects require medium level sleight of hand skill but are not sleight heavy. There one or two such as Apocalypse that in the words of the author is –‘…technically one of the most demanding routines…requires many months of practice…. ‘ However most readers will be able to use the presentation/pot and substitute a less demanding solution. On the other hand routines like PERFECT P.A.T.E.O. need no sleights and rely on subtlety and some touches you will use. Shockwave is a no gimmick, equivoke handling of B’Wave that could be adapted to other themes e.g. with business cards, or with photo face cards (e.g. the they select the Saddam Hussein card, or the glamour girl card etc). Not an Elmsley count in sight. Andrew recommend using blank faces for the discards but maybe that makes it too obvious there was a linguisitc force at play so you could just well substitute spot cards I feel which means you don’t have to go searching for matching blank face cards to try this. The same method can be applied to other items with a little lateral thinking. The book makes a ‘creditable’ attempt at giving due credit to sources of inspiration. And there is also summary at the end of the book of where you can find details of most sleights - these references are not always the original sources but may be more accessible or describe the move well. Living outside of the U.K. for the last decade I have had no prior exposure to the author’s work and no particular bias to review favourably or otherwise Nonetheless there are many areas where I can see parallel lines of inspiration, or interest with some of my own routines, so I may have grasped some of the effects faster or given them more or weight because of over familiarity so this may not be the most objective review. Experienced card magicians may well have similar thoughts so they will either love discovering how a professional has streamlined or extended a favourite routine or they may wish for something a little more off the beaten track. I am happy with my purchase. Explanations are clear and there some colour digital photographs but I did not generally find these were necessary. I spotted only 2 minor typos and although there a few more mixed tenses than I would like, the grammar and clarity of explanation is much better than most ebooks out there. What I particularly liked is the opening succinct statement of each effect, which signals the author understands the point of the effect and what to leave out.. There are tips that only come with experience and footnotes and updates aplenty. Steve Jones, Dubai, Mar 2102

I just picked this up in the last week and am currently working through it. So far, I've found it to be a good collection of effects with a lot of value packed into its 120+ pages. If you are familiar with Andrew's earlier work, you should check this out; if you aren't familiar with his work, you should look him up.
Thanks - Mark |

REVIEW
Wisdom Begins in Wonder by Andrew Murray Price: £19/~£30 Where to buy: http://www.andrewmurraymagic.moonfruit.com The summary: Andrew Murray is an excellent magician with several prestigious titles to his name, including ‘Magic Circle Close – Up Magician of The Year 2004’. This is his latest tome, which is filled with sleights and effects – 27 are old (17 of these however have been updated with a ‘Further Thoughts’ commentary, outlining alternate handlings), 8 are new plus a colour change, a four of a kind production and two full deck false cuts. Therefore, you will receive 39 items overall, in a collection of 124 pages. Many effects are FASIDU and everything is cards minus one ‘imaginary coin’ effect and a Matrix. Many different card plots such as transpositions, spelling, sandwiches, reset, card in hand, triumph and many more. The production quality: The production quality of this book is very nice, and everything is presented in a simple but classy manner, making it easy to read. The cover is quite interesting, and I really like the contents page. The tricks: I will outline a wide selection of the effects offered, and what I thought of them: 1. Max! – This is a very effective version of Maxi – Twist by Roger Smith, that Andrew has routined to be especially suited to walk-around work. Four aces are displayed, the deck is pocketed, and the aces magically turn face down one at a time. The ace of Spades is pocketed, but then jumps back to the packet. Finally, the remaining aces transform into a Royal Flush in Spades. This is really awesome. It uses a normal deck, with the only downside being a four card setup, but if you are happy to do that then this routine will be fantastic – especially as everything is examinable at the end. Very visual and a nice surprise ending. 9/10. 2. Pulse (No palm colour change) – This is simply fantastic, and it is very easy to do. As stated, there is no palm, and in my opinion, it looks better than the classic Erdnase change. The only downside is it can only be used in certain situations, but it is very visual, and I have already applied it to a creation of mine. 9/10. 3. Quickstep – This is a superb sandwich effect, which would be perfect for a tabletop card routine. The first phase is especially fair, and the selection appears out of nowhere in between the Jokers, in the centre of the pack. The kicker is also very nice. 8/10. 4. F.T.W – This is a cool reversal of John Carey’s effect ‘WTF’. It is a version of the Interchange plot and requires no palming. Although I would prefer to place the ‘Kings’ into spectator’s hands instead of your pockets, I like this a lot. 8/10. 5. Three – This is a strong mental magic routine revolved around coincidence. Each of the three phases gets increasingly more powerful, and it is from a shuffled deck of cards. A fantastic worker for any magicians that want to add a trick that it is a bit more mentalism – Esque. Simple but very strong. 10/10. 6. Following Oil and Water – This is an examinable and quite effective 6 card Oil and Water. I like the first two phases, but I believe the last phase has an unnecessary amount of displacements, and is not too strong due to this. I believe that Alex Elmsley’s Oil and Water + Follow The Leader Hybrid is superior, but I do like the idea of mixing them face up and face down. 7/10. 7. Triform – This is an excellent transposition effect, and is the best I have seen. The Ace of Spades is openly placed on top of the deck, King of Hearts openly placed second from the top. A card is selected near the middle of the pack, and placed back in the centre. The Ace is given to one spectator, and the king is given to another. The top card is turned over revealing an indifferent card, and this is then visibly transformed into the King. The spectator holding the King now turns it over to find it is the Ace, and the spectator that held the Ace finds the selection! So simple, but extremely effective. 10/10. Conclusion: I have outlined only seven of the incredible 39 items in this Ebook. The book is written tremendously well, and for me the huge Sleights Bibliography at the end of the Ebook is the clincher, making this one of the best magic Ebooks I have seen. A huge amount of material for your £19, and material that will go a long way. Highly Recommended. |
