This is a trick to be done over the phone, or even via email or text. So the instructions need to be complete and clear, but not like reading a dictionary! And the effect itself needs to be magical. So if you'd like to play along with me and check my instructions, I'd appreciate the help.
To start: Grab your deck and pull out any three different number cards. Suits don't matter. Lay them down in a row front of you. Next: Take each of the three cards and mulitply the value by three. Then pull out number cards to create the new number. For instance, if 7 is your first card, 7 x 3 = 21. So you'd pull out a 2 and an ace (of any suit) to make 21. Do the same for the other two cards. Lay all these new cards out in a second row. Then remove the original three cards in the top row - we won't need these again. Once again: Take each individual card in the new row, multiply its value by three, and pull out cards to make that new number. Lay all these cards out in a new row. When you're done, pick up the top row and set them aside. Finally: What we now have is a totally random number that neither of us would have or could have predicted at the beginning. We could not have known how many cards or the numbers that would be on the table right now. Take any one of those cards and turn it face down. Tell me the values of all the other cards. Go ahead and mix up the order if you want. ************* End of trick instructions. Go ahead and follow the steps. If you see anything that's not clear, let me know. If you make it to the end, post your numbers. I'm suposed to be able to tell you the value of your face-down card. Cheers!! :8>) Ed |

One of my first cards was a 10
10 X 3 = 30 So now I pull out a three and a zero? |

Thought of the same. In other tricks 0 is 10. Might be the same here.
It should be included in the instructions. |

Erp! Didn't think of that.
Okay - let's restrict it to numbers 1 - 9. |

Mike - did you do the whole thing through?
Pull out three cards (1 thru 9) Multiply each of those by three and pull out new cards. Put away the original three. Then again multiply each card by three and pull out new cards. Put away the second set so all you have is the third set. Turn one of those over. Usually the person winds up with 'way more cards than that. But I guess if you started with smaller numbers, you could end up with fewer cards. In that case, I'm going to say that your face-down card is .... six. Ed |

Yep. It was 6
I picked smaller cards to make things quicker and easier. I don't think this is a very strong trick at this point. Too much procedure for most people and not very puzzling for math lovers. Also, when dealing with playing cards people would expect you to get the suit (which you can't). Still, it's fun to play with these ideas and see where they lead. Maybe with a little tweaking this will be a great trick (but I suspect it will always have limited appeal). |

Yep. It was 6 *whew*!!! :8>) I'm playing around with things that might be done over phone, text or email - especially the text or email where you can have instructions but you don't have the luxury of voice. Thanks for helping! Ed |

How were the instructions? Would you make any changes?

I must confess I had the secret wrong. I figured it was a question of casting out 9's and then subtracting from 9 and it worked on my sample. But on Capt Hook I would have predicted 6.
