OK. I was performing at a restaurant and stopped by a table. There sat a man and woman in their late twenties. Very nice couple. I introduced myself, we talked for a few short mintues and they were ready to see some prestidigitation. I always like to involve my audience and had the lady participate. She then asked me to do something for her significant other as it was his birthday. He was very excited. I decided to perform a coins across routine in his hands. I asked him to hold out his hand palm up !
:wow: I thought to myself can't you see that your hands are filthy? They weren't just a litte dirty, they were filthy. I know there are some hard working guys(and gals) out there and no matter how much they wash their hands they still look dirty even though they are technically clean. (so to speak) This guys hands were DIRTY! I hesitated for a second but what could I do? I didn't want to ask for the other hand. I didn't want not to perform the effect since I told him in advance what was going to happen. I just performed as if nothing was wrong. In the kitchen area they have a hand sanitizer dispensor which I visited soon after I left their table. Sadly, I see this too often but not to this degree. Make sure you keep a small bottle or two of hand sanitizer in your close-up case. I feel like I want to take a shower now.
Guilt will betray you before technique betrays you!

I think I would have faked a heart attack to get out of your predicament. You should have used the old line "Give me the clean hand". :0)
It really grosses me out, when I see people leaving a public bathroom stall, and they don't wash their hands!!!

Just to put a different perspective on things, I couldn't care less if someone's hands are dirty. It just doesn't bother me. If you are worried about germs you can't see them. Dirt or grease or mustard or mud aren't going to hurt you.

David. First. I would avoid the non-handwashing person who leaves the bathroom. With that said.
It's an interesting mindset. I've seen my doctor and every other doctor shake hands and/or touch each and every patient they see. As far as they are concerned, as long as they don't have an open cut on their hands they can always wash later. If you're more worried about someone getting your props dirty, that's a different subject. I agree on that. In that case you might mutter how you thought "this trick" might be good but on second thought you want to do something special. Then put the touchy-feeley stuff away. Other then that, it's worth considering that people associate a freshly painted park bench as being clean but paint on Someone's hands is somehow dirty. To the contrary might act as a barrier.

Well, at least now you can work on a line for something like that...
my dad is a mechanic. has his hands in car grime all day. it literally would take him 30 minutes to get his hands semi-clean. so most of the time he just doesn't bother. when he takes my mom out to restaurants his hands are always dirty. actually, its quite charming. |

Just because a hand looks clean doesn't mean it is. Likewise, a "Dirty" hand can still have less germs on it.
Get over it and wash your hands. Sorry, but if you don't like "germs" then you shouldn't be doing in the hands coins across.

To the OP: Now you have a great story to tell all of the clean handed patrons. Just always ask if their hands are relatively clean or not prior to doing the those types of tricks. Then tell them the story of the filthy handed spectator. After all you had to ask and they will get a laugh out of it.
If they really do have dirty hands: 1. After you ask then you change the trick to something else more visualy oriented. 2. Just be frank with them and say for this next trick we need some clean hands as you hand them a wet nap to clean up first. Waiter! We need a hand ambulance quick. 3. Wave your hands over his. I've just turned your finger into a candy cane. Go ahead and tast it. I could imagine the look on Monks face when he sees those hands.

My line when a dirty hand is displayed... "Oh, looks like you had a flat tire on your way here."

I usually answer the door with "It's not dirt... It's paint and glue... Don't touch anything or you'll look like me"

Regarding hands and germs: my brother-in-law is an MD and I've asked him about the issue of working with folks who have colds and other transmissible infections. He tells me that, along with hand-cleaning, he's developed the habit of *not* touching his face (eyes/nose/lips) while working, as these areas are where you're likely to transmit germs into your system (I hope that makes sense).
I seem to pick up other folk's colds easily -(, so I've tried to monitor myself in such situations, and keep my hands away from my face. It seems to help, though it is a little tricky, and makes me feel a little OCD about the whole thing. -) Larry S. |

Yikes .. that is an awkward situation; another of my favorite is little kids with saliva or food all over their hands
