Oh dear. Fire Starter, people on this forum are not trying to insult you. They are trying to help you . Some will express it subtly, others bluntly. So let's all be friends .
On the upside, I thought "rat's patootie" was rather amusing, nice one Ekuth |

Such a strange fellow you are? what you refer to in your first verbal attack at me has nothing to do with what has gone on in this thread,I have had some very good feedbck ,poitive I may add.If you don 't like what I have written, don t read it,simple,a little like yourself, I see you are new on here and you feel you have to gang up on people when this is clearly none of your business and was nearly laid to rest until you have fired it up again.
Yeah but when you're building a wall how about using sponge balls instead of bricks? And instead of cement, how about hummus? WHAT ARE YOU ON?. |

Another example of someone "asking" for help, doesn't like the answer, so he attacks the provider. Nicely played. Grammar matters. Spelling matters. Especially when you are asking about sending out printed material. How would anyone here assume anything other than your printed material would look the same as your post (grammatically speaking).
After reading your initial post, I, too, was kind of surprised that you are a 50ish year old person. By the way you reacted, I was even more surprised that you're a 50ish year old person . Again, since this is all I know about you, I cringe to think how you might react when a spectator calls you out on a double lift. This is rhetorical so you don't need to tell me how you do, in fact, react. I, too, believe face to face is the best way to sell yourself. However, it's possible that you do have a fantastic promo letter which may get someone's attention. What I would do is test it out. Make an appointment or, if possible, stop in and ask the owner/manager for their professional opinion on your promo idea. At this stage, don't try to sell them your services. Just use them as your very own focus group. Try more than one....try several. Good luck to you and let us know how things turned out and which techniques you used. patrick |

In spite of the trend by the magic community, especially on the forums and even more so through dealer advertising, to push other magicians to start performing for pay and "selling themselves", there is no shame in being an amateur. Some of the best magicians I have ever seen, did so only as amateurs. They were able to keep magic as a hobby, as other careers paid their bills.
The lack of stress (yes it happens to magicians who perform for a living, too) allowed them to focus their effort in magic on perfecting the show, rather than the business. So, does anyone know if there are breathalyzers for computer keyboards?

Just to echo what's already been said for those still playing along at home, spellling and grammar counts. It's as much a part of your professional presentation as a demo reel. As we hear over and over, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. I'm a stage director and receive a lot of submissions that shock me. Here are graduates with Masters degrees from Yale and Julliard who can't write a proper cover letter; most are rife with typos and 'text/meme speak'. That letter often decides whather I will even bother to look at their resume because that paragraph or two says much about the person. When I receive a resume in a colorful envelope sprayed with glitter, it goes in the circular file because it screams "My resume won't impress you so maybe arts and crafts will!" Don't encourage annoyed recipients to torch your card.
Your introduction letter should be brief and to the point because it shows that you are considerate of the reader's time. Sentence One should introduce yourself and what you do. Sentence Two should make a personal connection with the venue to show that you know who they are and what they do (We love your <house specialty>; X is our favorite waitress and she always leaves us smiling; etc). Sentence Three is what they will gain by making some time to speak with you; what you can do for them. Sentence Four is an acknowledgement of their time and request for contact. It's that simple. A professionally written and presented introduction, personalized for the recipient. Do your homework first and send the letter to the GM by name. Letters sent 'To Whom It May Concern' are generally of no concern to anyone. The entire goal, the only goal, of a cold letter is to get a foot in the door so taht you can sell yourself in person. I hope this helps a bit.
