I mentioned somewhere in here that the middle finger on my right hand was "clicking" and the ring finger of my left hand would ache.
My doctor mentioned something called "trigger finger" and suggested a specialist. I finally got to see the specialist yesterday. I got a cortizone shot in my right hand, he then told me the left hand was early onset of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome! (lovely) So now I have two molded casts to wear to bed each night. Then, as an added bonus, he threw in that the swellings on the first joints of each finger were ostioarthritus. Times like this, I'm glad I never managed to be a "finger flinger."

But shouldn't some movement (provided it isn't the same exact movement over and over again) be therapeutic for your hands? Maybe you SHOULD start some finger flinging stuff to give your hands some exercise?

Make a device that will randomly (say three times out of five) shoot a thumb tack into the base of your middle finger when you flex it.
Also make another device that will lock that finger into place, taking a consious (sp) effort to pop your finger back out straight. (causing the thumb tack to hit the base of your finger again) Work with that for awhile and then get back to me.

That sounds like some pretty nasty pain.

I am sorry to hear that Ed. My wife had an op for Carpel Tunnel Syndrome a few years ago and it seems to have worked nicely.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Dude, I feel for you...
I have exactly the same thing going on, and it forced me to reinvent my career. I no longer do the heavy close-up or manipulation as I once did, and stopped booking shows for that kind of performance, because I couldn't guarantee myself that I could handle a deck of cards or some coins come the day of the show. It sucks. You never know when it's going to hit, but you will learn the kinds of actions that set up the scenario, and you learn to alter your hand movements accordingly. For me, that can be as innocent as twisting off a bottle cap. I call them "stingers" because when they hit, it's like a bolt of lightning shoots through your hand, leaving one or more fingers both tingling numb, and in a lot of pain at the same time. They hit fast and I blurt out responses that make others around me think I have Tourette Syndrome. It happens to my left hand more often than my right, but I also know about the finger locking thing. First time that happened, it scared the crap out of me. Sometimes I have to find two fingers that do work, and use them as alternate choices to perform certain tasks. Be thankful for opposable thumbs.

Yep, twisting off a bottle cap is done new ways now. Just cutting rope, the scissors have to be handled differently.. and there's still a little pain, just not too much to work through without showing.

Jefferson in Philadelphia has excellent specialty groups. I had a hip replaced at one of them and only have a four inch scar.
I see you live in Rhode Island, but you still may wish to check it out. Philly has some great hospitals and surgeons. Here's a link and it mentions your condition. http://www.jeffersonhospital.org/methodi......ter.html

I'm not bad enough to need to go out of state for specialists. But thanks for the info.
I trust the guys here at RI Hospital, if they recommend I go elsewhere, I'll look into it. Thanks again.

...and now I've slid on some wet grass yesterday and twisted my ankle!
I don't wanna be me right now.

Mom had the carpal tunnel surgery in the late 80's or early 90's. It's probably improved a lot since then so if it comes to that I am optomistic about your recovery.

I give this advice to everyone I meet who complains of pain such as yours. Some of you may have read this before. After taking a nasty fall and landing palms down on my hands some years ago, I found myslef in pain that I previously could not imagine. The doctor gave me horse pills that were a step up from ibuprofin, and when I used those pills, the pain was still dtrong enough to keep me from sleeping. Then they tested me for carpel tunnel, and the test was negative. They told me I had severe tendonitis and gave me braces to wear on both wrists. They wared me the braces would only help for a time and they were right about that. A month or two later I was back to taking pills that I was warned could screw up my liver or some such.
Finally in desparation, I went to see an accupuncturiat. I did not believe in acupuncture, but it helped a lot and it started working well after the third or fourth treatment. I cut way back on the pills and after two weeks of three treatments a week stopped taking them at all. Also at that time we cut the treatements down to once a week. After about three months I stopped getting the treatments. This was about 15 years ago. the pain has never returned. Free advice is worth every penny you pay for it. Do with this as you will.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm not in such pain that I want to reach out to accupuncture yet, but I will keep it in mind.
I also have two braces to wear at night. The left one covers my entire wrist, the right one just covers my hand and isolates my middle finger.

Well, the doctor says the cortizone didn't solve the problem. Now he wants to operate on my right hand. If I hold my right hand out flat, the right middle finger is curled slightly downward. The doctor says that condition is only going to get worse unless he works on the hand. So there'll be ANOTHER two weeks I won't be able to work! (That's "do magic" although "cashier at Wal*Mart" is also going to be a problem.)

That happened to me 25 years ago. My right middle finger would bow down and lock. There wasn't much pain and I had to use my hand to unlock the joint. At the time I was doing a lot of puppetry so I stopped and changed to magic.

Hmmmm, middle finger lock; used it a lot; puppetry? Sounds more like HGLSS to me.

Hey! Remember me and my hands (and left leg?) Well, when the doctor looked at it, he said I should have an X-Ray just to be on the safe side.
Short story shorter, there's a hairline fracture on an outside bone of my left leg! :sigh: The leg is a lot better, but I still clump around on it after a while!
