Just to clear up a little thing. (I spoke to Kam about this)
I did not make a mistake with the insurance company. I had to switch companies because the one I was using did not cover what I did. I contacted a company, listed everything I needed the policy to cover and that was that. Years later my trailer is stolen with one of my shows in it. They contacted me and told me that it was not covered because the trailer was parked at my house?? it was not, it was at my shop. I asked why that would matter as my policy was to cover anywhere, they said it was not. I called my agent and she pulled the notes on what I had ordered and it was to have been covered. Shortly after a call to the insurance company asking who my attorney should contact, I was fully covered. So, make sure you ask about every scenario that could happen when purchasing insurance. Just FYI |

I misunderstood. All I remembered from this ordeal was that he wasnt covered for whatever reason. It was the insurance company's fault, and that's why I'm asking questions. Does specialty insurance drop the ball like his did? Would IJA cover fire blowing? that's all I'm saying.

I gave you the agents name, phone number, and as many details as I know. Do you want me to make the call for you too? Hi Kent

Thanks. I'll keep it in mind. Like I said before, I'm waiting on my current insurance agent for a quote. If it comes back too high, I'll check others out. Right now I'm just gathering information.

Btw, my questions were less questions and more pointing out that it doesn't seem to fit that any performer can get juggling insurance. I wasnt asking you cause I'm too lazy to call, I was asking because I'm overly sarcastic. lol

If you throw three balls up in the air at any time during your show you are a good fit. Before the IJA started insuring their members I joined the world clown organization for insurance, and I have never been a clown.

Some jugglers juggle fire during their performance, so I would think that the use of fire is something they (IJA) are familiar with. This does not mean that it is covered under the base policy though. Fire indoors would seem very difficult to get approval for if you go through propper channels (and you would need to do so to be covered by any insurance policy).

Just to clarify about Specialty Insurance...
I've used them for years and for a magician in the fair market, the product they offer will suffice. However, some things to note... 1) This is liability insurance. It DOES NOT cover theft or damage to your props, or YOU, etc. It covers damages to OTHER people or OTHER property. 2) It's not a true 5,000,000 policy per act. It's a 5,000,000 group policy. That means $5,000,000 for EVERYONE on the policy. So if there's been say $2 million of payouts over the course of the year. By the end of the policy, there's only $3 million left in it. This is an important distinction not so much for small grounds acts at fairs, but for larger attractions. One large attraction I know of had to buy their own $5,000,000 policy for a single given 10 day event. That additional policy ran nearly $700. Point being - make sure that whatever your act that you are appropriately insured. 3) The problem with hypnotists (and the subsequent reason for training) is that more claims are filed against hypnotists than almost any other act or attraction. In some cases, yes, the hypnotist does something stupid and someone gets injured. However, in many cases the subject claims some injury because of some mysterious super-hypno-mind-power. ie: A claimant suggests the hypnosis was so powerful that it caused them to fall down a flight of stairs, two days after the show. We all pretty much know that's BS. But from the insurance policy standpoint, it's too expensive to defend in litigation. The insurance settles out of court. Life goes on. With those things in mind I'll say that I've worked with Stephanie at Specialty for 4 or 5 years now. I'm very happy with the product they offer as it will adequately cover my attractions. They also don't charge anything for additional insured certs. That's one of the reasons I left IBM and dropped their coverage because I could easily have spent an additional $300+/year just for additional insureds. -Robert |

Robert: Thank you! This is the kind of stuff I was looking for. The 5,000,000 thing kinda scares me, but I've been doing this for a while with no insurance, and everything is fine. I am not a hypnotist, but I do perform with fire. It sounds like the other issues are fine. I don't care much about damage to me or my props. or theft. I don't have giant illusions to worry about. Thanks again! this helps tremendously.

Kameron,
For the average performer like you or me, Specialty is the solution we need. They cover fire "dancers" so I would have to assume they'd cover the fire in your show. As with any fire use, be sure you have appropriate extinguishers immediately available, and use common sense. Good luck out there. -Robert |

Hey Kam,
Have you been playing with swords? I only ask because I see your nose is missing from your avatar? ;~ ) (by the way, I like the new avatar!) I might limit the number of questions I ask here in the Café - I don't want people thinking I'm lazy while I'm trying to gather information or learn something (not sarcastic, facetious) ;~ ) JD
