Hello, I recently took a cruise and I noticed they had a magician on board, so I was excited to see his performances of course. It came time to his stage show, nothing really that impressive but a decent show. Later that week he had a close up show, I was really excited for it considering I am a close up magician, so I sat down front row and waited for it to start... I'm not going to say his name or what cruise ship it was to protect his ID but I want to get peoples opinions on what happened. He started his show with a sponge ball routine, ended the routine with making two sponge balls into a square, but then showed the audience exactly how did it, with the gimmicked sponge ball and went on saying its for sale... he did the exact same thing with the appearing wane and d-lites, he showed the audience the gimmicks and how to use distraction and slight of hand. Near the end of the show I stormed off, I was highly offended with what was going on.... Do you feel this is wrong?

I feel it is wrong ethically, but there is nothing that can be done about it, sadly...

Why do you feel the need to protect his identity? It's obvious that he doesn't care since he's working publicly on a cruise ship and exposing magic to the cruising public. Or was this a cruise for people in the witness protection program?

So how exactly did you get your start in magic? When you first got started in the craft how thrilled would you have been to get access to this level of information and effects?
I really doubt magic is going to suffer because of some BOR Slum Magic sales.

I don't think its right mostly because I believe that when you show a trick to the audience they actually want to be fooled. Brief hope that magic exist in this world was forcibly taken away from them

That wasn't a close up show that was a sales pitch. A bit deceptive if it was advertised as a show. That cruise line must have been giving him a ****ty salary for him to have to "sell" magic.
He probably would have better sales if he didn't reveal the items. I wonder if people who do things like this have no confidence in their magic to stand on its own. |
