Has an in depth biographical article on Jay Ose ever appeared in any of the magic magazines? He was the technical advisor on "The Cincinnati Kid" and other films. I think he was also the house magician at The Magic Castle.
I first saw Jay Ose perform on Art Linkletter's "House Party" TV show when he did some magic and I believe some gambling exposes. One of the tricks he did on "House Party" was Peter Kane's "Bullet Trick" or "Single Shot," which is shown in this jpeg http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/alma/0/0/0/im/al000951.jpg (This is a cropped picture of a photo that I remember seeing in GENII. The full photo shows Jay performing the trick for artist Man Ray.) One of the other tricks he performed on House Party was a "You Do As I Do" effect where three cards matched instead of one. I knew the basic one-card You Do As I Do from Joseph Leeming's _Fun with Magic_, but the three matching cards fooled me until I realized that the modus of one of the other cards was also written up as a separate trick in the Leeming book. After I realized that, the third revelation easily fell into place. Years later when I saw Vernon lecture in Washington, DC, he performed the same You Do As I Do routine and fooled most of the people in the audience badly. A book about Jay Ose is one of those books that I think is waiting to be written and which would likely, if well done, be a best-selling classic. The IMDB lists several appearances by Jay Ose in TV shows like "Mr. Ed" (three episodes--written by Lou Derman of course), "Mission Impossible," and "The FBI" (two episodes). ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez Post script: Art Linkletter also had Marian Chavez as a guest on "House Party" once. I don't remember much about her appearance except that she did some nice card sleights. Does anyone know if Art was a member of The Magic Castle or whether he himself might have been an amateur magician?

I just found this very interesting web article about Jay Ose written by Jon Racherbaumer that mentions Jay Ose. It is available on the Stevens Magic website:

Hi Amado - nice name you have over there -
I recently became interested in JO The picture you are referring to (or maybe is another similar one) is also printed in "More Greater Magic" - the added section on Greater Magic. Also, just at the beginning of the Vernon Revelations videos he talks about JO Thanks for bringing this up Max

There was a nice feature article written about him in the early 1960's (pre '65) in Genii magazine. Vernon wrote about him often, particularly about his ability to remember everyone's name and details about their life, kids, etc;
Ose was a tap dancer before he became a magician and Vernon thought that might hae to do with his great sense of timing.

Jay Ose was consultant and appeared in the films "Waterhole No 3" with James Coburn and "Flim-Flam Man" with George C. Scott. He knew 15 different endings for the Three Card Monte.

Anatole,
This website has several magic related television shows including a bunch of Kreskin shows, one of which he is interviewing Walter Gibson. http://www.historicfilms.com/ if you look for F-9067.2 you will find the program You Asked for it in which Jay Ose is demonstrating card cheating with Gerald Kosky. If you can't find it by that number search "gamblers and Skippy peanut butter" they were one of the sponsors for this program. While there are a number of magic related films, some you need a pro account to access. This particular one with Jay Ose is free as are the Kreskin videos. Steve |
