Hello guys,
I have recently taken up learning how to create balloon scultures as I believe it will help with my magic I can make: Flower Poodle Sausage dog Giraffe Tulip T-rex Flower bracelet Parrot Pirrate sword Lion Mokey and banana Frog And also "crazy hat" I have approximately 175 baloons left and was thinking about going down to the local markets and selling balloons I thought about doing them for tips but I am worried that no-one will give any money If I was going to sell them, 1 balloon animals will be $1 And 2 balloon animals will be $2 Do I need to learn any more animals or will these be fine???? If you want I can post some images of the above animals Thanks in advance, Jake |

My boyfriend is a magician and he says learning balloons won't make you a better magician, but acting classes will. There are some magic routines that involve balloons, but as a whole I don't see how balloons will necessarily help specifically with your magic. As a twister I take my art seriously and I want to master as many things as possible for personal satisfaction and so someone can ask for almost anything they can think of and I can do it. It's kind of like asking a painter is being able to paint a bowl of fruit good enough to sell some art. Not to be rude, but it's kind of an insult the way you put it. I twist balloons because I love it, and I'm fortunate enough to also make money at it. If you don't have a genuine appreciation for the art you will never be more than just good enough. Now if you do love it, never stop learning. There are so many amazing things you can create and the sky is the limit.

However I am just beginning and there is no way I could make anything, however, being able to make 20 or so models for after a magic show is my goal. I will not be making them often, and this trip to the markets would be a kind of preactice and money making oppurtunity, not a regualr thing. Sorry if I came across as insulting towards you and other bslloon artists, Jake |

It's fine, I know you didn't mean to come across that way, but it sounded funky the way you worded it. yes adding balloons to a show will add to the overall package your selling to people. More bang for buck. A few shapes will take you a long way, as you will find you make the same ones a million times, esp. when one kid sees one they like, they all will want it.

Jake there are a lot of good dvds out there if you are serious about making balloon animals, I have gotten a lot of milage out of Mark Byrnes DVD's Bad to the Balloon... Buster Balloon also puts out some good dvds but I would wait as they are a bit more complex. Check out marks dvds you will find some simple balloons that look amazing and can be made quickly if you are doing line work

If real world experience is what you are striving for to improve your abilities (both technical and interactive), then contact your local community groups such as Boys & Girls clubs, Salvation Army etc and offer an hour or two of free balloon twisting for their after school program. Radio stations that do "on-site" broadcasting can be a good source for events to twist balloons at.
If your intention is income, then local shopping centers and flea/farmers markets are OK. It will take some phone tag to find and talk to the correct person to gain permission. If you have some tourist destinations near you, they would be a good place. If your intention is marketing, then choose locations with a demographic that can afford your services and set up a small table for your cards/pamphlets. Selling vs tipping. (I think we would all prefer an hourly salary) I don't like selling. Parents can get upset that the item they just paid for broke before they got to the car, causing tears and tantrums. Tipping, imo, is a better way to go. Place a tip jar on your table or wear a tip pin. Tell everyone that the balloons are free but tips are appreciated. Yes, some won't tip, mostly you'll get $1 per creation and occasionally you'll get more, but you've changed the dynamic from "buying a balloon" to "tipping for the service". |

So, lets see, you don't think you are good enough to get tips, but are good enough to sell them?!?
In the right spot I alwase make more tips than some one selling, with out question. plus I never have to turn some one away. in the wrong spot there is no $$ to be had. if you pay $10. for a bag of balloons: 1, You paid to much for balloons 2. the first $1. tip pays for the next 9 balloons 3. you get people to stand in line to sell your show. 4. hand out your cards, or if selling balloon is your thing, sell you business cards, see if you get bookings like that. you know plenty now is the time to go out and hit the bricks, you will learn a lot by doing, and if the tip come all the better. If they like you they will tip you, if they don't they might buy a balloon, but that will be the end of it. no booking, they got what they wanted, the balloon not you. go, have FUN, learn, and improve, and with only 175 balloons left you should not be out too long. one big rush on swords and you could be shocked how fast the balloons go.

I am going to the local markets in 2 weeks to do some magic and ballooning.
I have permission from the person in charge... So this is actually going to happen! I was thinking of doing 1-2 hours of balooning (see how it goes) then a 30 minute magic show. At my balooning stand I could have a sign saying something like "magic show, 12 oclock" or something That way I get some money from the balloons, then get to practice my magic show. What'd you think Oh... And I am also going to be buying a couple a hundred more balloons so I can practice before I perform Anyone know a good (cheap) place that sells 260Q's???? |
