Anyone ever hear of Soft Paws? http://pixiepets.webs.com/dogs.htm
I've been using Richard Hughes SupremeMasterGoldenProduction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAmZz3Nv9MM Great bag, great release, overall awesome way to pull a rabbit from the hat. Now, sometimes, my rabbit's claws "dig in" to the inside of the bag as (the Rabbit) is being released into the hat. This has nothing to do with Richard's bag and everything to do with my rabbit. This can delay the release of the rabbit by a second or two - no big problem, but still a problem. Well, problem solved with these things called "soft paws". Just thought I'd pass this information along.... |

Clarification is in order. You are using the Supreme Master Livestock Production not the Golden Production. Your rabbit did not like the SMGP and promptly tried to claw his way out and destroyed the bag. The SMLP is slightly larger and has a different release but still one handed.
As you said, a lot of it has to do with the animal not the bag. When I was in 4-H, we did on occasion trim the nails or put the rabbit on a sandpaper covered board in the cage to help wear down the nails. Richard

Anyway.........
These soft paws are great because kids always want to hold the rabbit after the show. And now my rabbit is "unarmed", but not "declawed". I told the soft paw company via phone, that I have a dutch rabbit. They recommended the correct size because they know their product. They told me I needed to buy the "small dog" size. |

Soft paws have been recommended by veterinarians for ages as an alternative to declawing cats, as stated by JonathanM. They are easy to apply and the animal can wear them comfortably until they wear off. They can be removed earlier, if desired. They are both respectful and responsible. http://www.softpaws.com/
Richard didn't appear to be offended, FWIW. Quote: On 2012-05-22 14:19, hugmagic wrote: |

I use soft paws on my cat, however, cats shed the outer 'shell' of toenail monthly and the soft paw cover comes off with this. I don't think bunnies shed their toenails, so check with your auntie and see if she thinks this will be ok for your rabbit. The toenail would have to grow really long and then the tip be cut to remove the soft paws cover.
Perhaps you could trim the soft paw smaller so it would just cover the tip of the nail! This would allow for you to put only on the 'dead' part of the nail and it could be trimmed more easily. This would keep toenail fungus at bay, because of regular removal/trim of the soft-paw. Under no circumstances should you declaw an animal. This is cruel surgery and requires complete amputation of the first digit of the toe/finger, which includes bones and nerves and often results in long-term nerve pain.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

You're right - let's go back to the SOFT PAWS.....
Laurie, I have a question: For your cat, do you clip the open end of the soft paws for a custom fit? (nice coin move on your website by the way) |

Jonathan,
Yes, you can do that to size the caps more precisely. And thankyou. |

Rabbit claws don't retract like cat's claws. Does a cat's ability to retract their claws make it a challenge to put on soft paws?

I haven't found it to. You hold the toe in a manner that extends the claw.

I'm thinking "Max" can join the show now.
Posted: May 24, 2012 10:29pm Ok, my boys and I had the house to ourselves for the evening (before their mom got home). They helped me video the rabbit production I've been using. I recently did it as a quick finale for some proms. This video is rough, but I show the rabbit's claws wearing the soft paws afterwards. The rabbit just instantly drops in the hat without it's claws slowing things up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iynld26WeiI |

My rabbit does bite these things off, when that happens I replace them, but if there's no time for that I use mitton's like these
