I have a few ideas, but worried that maybe someone already published it, how does one do this research?

http://archive.denisbehr.de/index.php seems a good place to start.
Also some very experienced and knowledgeable folks here at the Café (and perhaps on the Genii forum) you could try asking via PM. |

Here are the most popular ways it's done these days:
1) Just publish it and see what happens. If you get called out, say you created it independently. 2) Research it and if it's been in print/video. If it is, just publish it and see what happens. If you get called out, say you created it independently. |

Zombie, you forgot the part where you say you've been performing this since 1931.

Tom, that's right. You must predate what's it print or video by as many years as possible.

What if, what if you have been doing a routine since 1931 and you didn't want to publish it, but, another magician saw you do it in 1967 and decided to publish it in 2012........saying the he's been doing it since 1967 ?
It happens ! Ben

Ask Café member Etienne Lorenceau. He is a scholar of magic and keeps meticulous records. Levent, Bill Palmer and Pete Biro each have a tremendous store of historical knowledge as well. If it's card magic, Steven Youell would be a good resource. There are plenty of others, but those folks are accessible if you're on the Café, and between them they probably know pretty much everything worth knowing about magic.

Talk to people you know, and TRUST. People who you know would know about magic history.
And, as mentioned, plenty of knowledgable people around these parts.

For example some folks are amazed to find how well the original Hofzinser assembly trick works - and that it's been put in Dover paperbacks. Also, as you start asking questions about what you believe to be new to the literature you'll have someplace to start the discussions. That's so much more respectful to our craft (with its 500+ years of available literature) than starting off with "I have ideas". IMHO you are better served in the long run by spending the time using your ideas/methods in performance for a while before worrying about where they fit in our literature. Lots of things seem good for "formal close up" but won't really serve you when you are working and want to use the item in a ten minute set that has to work properly at each of ten repeats at the gig. There are several competent and well read card guys at the Café who can help with the "what's the latest" on specific notions/methods when you're ready to hear things like "what, you have not read MINT?" or "that's the first item in the stranger card section of Expert Card Technique". Best of luck with your work, Jon
