I have never argued with my father, or even raised my voice to him, and several years ago he threatened to cut me out of his will. He had decided because my brother was a drunk all of his life that he needed the money more than me.
I have never dressed like Santa or a clown, but I did fill in for a Barney gig when a friend got sick.

I never met Colonel Sanders, but I know a girl who was in a dance number when she was a kid, and he was in the front row. She did a kick and her shoe flew off and hit him. She said he got mad and left.

I've never met Colonel Sanders, but I've sat around drinking Mint Juleps!

I've had a meal in the Colonel's original restaurant, or what was left of it, in Corbin.

He played in many bridge tournaments and at one of them (Riverside's Mission Inn) he bought me my first magic trick, a set of Adams cups and balls, in a little shop that use to be there. My family name is Yarbrough and the famous bridge hand is named for an ancestor of ours. In fact the Yarbrough clan is best known for two things, a viking who was knighted by William the Conquer at the battle of Hastings and card players. |

Jonathan-
I knew your father Doug (and his regular partner, George K.) quite well. I played bridge at the Bridge Center of North Orange County very often from the early-mid 90s until I bought it in 2000. It was in 2000 or 2001 than my then-girlfriend and I went to the Castle as your parents' guests and met you and Charlotte and saw your show at the Castle. It was certainly a memorable night; though I went on to become a member and spent many nights at the Castle (I went to UCLA School of Law not far away), one never forgets the first time. I remember when he matter-of-factly told me he was your father, when he heard I did magic ("Oh, my son does magic, maybe you know him"... guess he does!) I remember one hand I played while partnering him very well, having gotten away with a really atrocious bid (I was young; what can I say?!). I apologized for the bid between rounds, but I was kind of laughing as we'd gotten a good result in spite of my bidding. With what I can only describe as a pained voice, he said, "You shouldn't joke about a thing like that!". He took the game seriously and expected a lot out of himself and his partners- not that they be superstars, but that they play up to their capabilities. And because of that, partnering with him made me a better player. Not because he actively taught me anything about the game, but because he took it seriously and led by example. I live in Burbank, most of my bridge playing is in L.A. County now, so I don't stay in touch with many of the players I was closer to 15 years ago, but I saw in the Bridge Bulletin that he had passed away, and I was very sorry to see it. As you know, he played not only in bridge tournaments, but also at the local club a few times a week, and he was well known as a good player, a courteous but fierce opponent, and a nice guy away from the table. He was also willing to partner with at least one new-but-promising player who was certainly not at his level at the time. He cared a great deal about his friends there, and helped the bridge club out before and while I owned it. I will always remember him fondly, and I remember your mother as well, though I only met her in the night went to the Castle. In conclusion, since perhaps you found my post by searching your name, let me just say Jonathan Pendragon.

A knighted viking at the Battle of Hastings? That is really cool cuz that was a pivotal point in all of world history.
Dumb I Done Did: 1. At Cypress Gardens in Florida at age 7 I decide to use my new camera to photograph a gator who was sunning on the shore. It would be nicer if the mouth was open so I ran down to smack it with a stick. A Southern Belle lady, they wander around as hostesses, tackled me about 15 feet shy of my deatination, yanked me up and smacked the heck out of me, which my parents allowed, for my artistic desires. 2. Older brother built wings and strapped 'em on me and I jumped off a 15 foot cliff to fly....I plummeted. |
