Hi everyone, I'm very new to magic and a little worried that I'll ever be any good at this late stage (just starting out in my forties!) but I've been researching a new book and have got really into this and am determined to give it a go! Nice to meet you all. Can anyone recommend a clear book that's available here in the UK please? I'm especially interested in psychological magic (hope that's what you call it). Ideally I'd like to start small, pick something and just rehearse it millions of times till I get a little more confident. Does that sound even remotely sensible? Thanks.

Hi, I don't think that starting late should be too much of a problem ( hope not, I'm a newb in my mid- thirties). By psychological magic do you mean mentalism? The penny for your thoughts is the forum area to go to if so. Welcome!

Welcome lornagibb,
I've seen some late starters do really well. They were dedicated and they seemed to get that their performances were as important as the moves. I'm not qualified to give book advice on Mental Magic. The Amazing Pog's suggestion of the "Penny for your Thoughts" forum is a good one. -Mary Mowder |

Thank you all of you. Yes, that is a very interesting forum. I've also now discovered The Cellar which is rather wonderful for me because I got into this by way of the history. And Mary, thank you for the reassurance, it's good to know. It's nice there's a female section too. I often research in the Magic Circle library here in London and there really aren't that many women around!

Welcome to the Café Lorna.
Go to "Penny for your Thoughts" and read the sticky topic at the top of the forum. At the end of Iain's post you will find a link to an article about what I consider to be 39 essential books on mentalism. Good thoughts, Bob |
