It's funny how some spectators perceive and remember the effects we perform.
Last night I was performing a set that included card to wallet. The card was selected and the lady put her signed card "inside" the card box I left on the table.( I didn't want her to do that, she just decided to put it inside the box) After some conversation I asked her to replace the card into the deck. She opened up the card box and put the card in the deck....... After some small talk, asking if she had a free choice of a card, yada yada yada, I then proceeded in taking her card out of my wallet. You should have seen her face. She said, " How did you get that card out of the box and into your wallet, I was holding it the whole time! " "Are you from outer space?" She didn't remember taking the card out of the box herself and neither did the other three people at the table. ( Now I'm thinking some of the other people may have noticed and didn't say anything but the the lady involved thought I was an outer space god.) This sort of thing does happen quite often and other times people have a memory like a steel trap. I was smiling inside (humbly) as she stared at me moving on to the next table. Just wanted to share!

Religions are built on stuff like that. Really.

Sometimes people see what they want to see? I did the vanishing bottle once, and after the show a guy asked me where the bottle could have possibly gone. He said he saw me tear the bag into small pieces!

If I'm working in an informal environment or for free or casually I'll actually ask a spectator what just happened in a trick after I've done it.
The amount of stuff that gets misremembered or the stuff that just gets plain created but didn't happen is phenomenal. Try it sometime! It's no wonder we get away with what we do so easily at times. |

The magic takes place in their heads.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Question to all:
Let's say the first routine in your set, floors the audience and they sit speechless, how would you enclitic applause? Because, If they don't applaud now they might not applaud for anything else.

While they are sitting with their jaws hanging down to their knees, I would probably do my best impersonation of Elvis with; "Thank you, Thank ya very much!"

It gives a signal that you are thanking them for the appreciation their silence is signaling. Either that or they didn't understand the effect or are surprised you tried to fool them with that last bit.
