Hello, Cafe patrons. My name is Jay and this is my first post. I have been lurking for a while and trying to read almost all of the posts that are currently available. I am 28 years old and have been studying and practicing magic for about 9 months.
I became hooked after seeing and buying the UFO whirling card effect from Houdini's Shop in New York-New York Hotel in Las Vegas. I was there for a nursing convention (I am a full time Registered Nurse, by the way) and came home with a hobby! Since then, I have spent much money on magic, almost exclusively on books and videos (with the occasional prop or gimmick purchased as well). So far, I have gone through a few phases as to what type of magic I am most comfortable performing, and I am still figuring that out. I seem to be gravitating towards close-up effects with common objects, a la Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment. I am still VERY impressionable in this hobby, and it's all I can do to not buy an effect as soon as I see it performed or described. My wife is super-supportive and loves to watch and critique my magic. She says she is going to send me to Jeff McBride's Master Class as a 30th birthday present in 2 years. Jeff is one of my favorite magicians, along with Michael Ammar, and Paul Harris. I can't wait to start posting here. I have so many things to say and would really enjoy getting to know some of you guys and gals. Talk to you all soon, Jay. |

Yes, start posting and asking! You will learn a lot.
I can imagine the first time I started magic, no message boards, limited videos, etc. Trust me, most magicians will go through very similar phases. Hope to see you post soon! A glass of Singapore Sling from Jimmy!

Hello and Welcome Friend Jay!
Nice to have you join us. And I think you have taken a good start with books and videos, before too many 'tricks'. Get the basics, and you will save a lot of money by working with what is in the books and Videos! Wish I had started that way! Glad to have you here, and I will look forward to your posts. BroDavid

Hi Jay.
Magic Nookie!? Oh, Magic Rookie. My mistake, sorry. (Sounded like a new Amazing Jonathan trick.) So glad that you're here Jay. The information on this site is pretty overwhelming in its quality and quantity. As you know, this cafe is GREAT. You are smart to invest your money in books and videos instead of "tricks". I wasn't as smart and I have the desk draws full to prove it! You will be amazed with the number of brilliant magicians who are members here and who will generously give of themselves to help a fellow magician. Truly wonderful people. You are in good hands. (Now turn your head and cough) Hay that was my wife who typed that last line! Enjoy! Joe Marotta |

Hi Jay,
welcome to The Magic Cafe. I can promise you that Master Class with Jeff McBride is worth the money your wife is going to spend. He made a Masterclass in Berlin, in March this year. He did it with Eugene Burger. All participants have been very pleased and took their art to the next level. Hold on and enjoy your stay here. Magically yours Manipulix

Hey Jay!
Welcome to the cafe! I'm a newcomer to magic myself (compared to some of these gurus!), and I'm sure you'll like it here! There's a ton that you'll learn here, AND it's nice having various pro magicians at your computer screen all at once!!! Let me treat you to some Tofu...The cafe has some great Tofu chicken! Lol! 5150, Bird Brain

Welcome! Your enthusiasm is contagious! Reminds me (and many others I'm sure) of how we felt those many years ago and why we love this art! You will enjoy it here and there is so much to learn from the many fine magicians here. A very warm community indeed! I too am very envious of the promise of the master class. McBride and Ammar are probably my two favorites and I've learned so much from their many videos.
Again welcome! |
