I apologize if this has been posted before, but was wondering if anyone incorporated this effect into their magic effects. I first learned it as a math problem my friend gave me, so I'll explain it as such for anyone who wants to try figuring it out:
Two people agree on a certain set of rules for a card trick. Any 5 cards are removed from the deck by person A. Person A hands 4 cards to person B in a certain order and person B can immediately name the remaining card that Person A is holding. What are the set of rules they agreed on? Obviously, the biggest downside to this effect is that you need a stooge who's in on it, but you could let anyone select the 5 cards. |

Thanks! Didn't know it's been turned into an app nor the name of the actual trick.

That's a lot of work to name a simple card IMHO... If you need to use a stoog I would hope for something a lot better. Neat math though ..... Just not comfortable about this stuff being on the internet for anyone to get for free. And I hate the Scam School exposures!!!!

I learned this trick on geometer.org and first performed it yesterday. It goes by the name "Guessing the Fifth Card" in section 7 of the document http://www.geometer.org/mathcircles/CardTricks.pdf .
It's a pretty cool trick, but your assistant has to practice the trick. Despite how much you practice, if your assistant makes a mistake, you gotta take the blame for the failed trick! |

I performed this trick again last week, and this time my secret assistant and I didn't make a mistake.
The result was pretty nice. I have to give credit to my secret assistant who did a good job of acting. He was so convincing that I even wondered if he realized this was the same trick I had taught him a few days earlier. Fortunately, he did exactly what he was supposed to do, so not only were the spectators amazed, but I was a bit relieved that the trick worked. |

I could imagine it still being impressive, even if the audience knew it was a stooge. As long as your back's turned & you glance at the remaining cards in a subtle, natural manner that doesn't arise suspicion, it'd be cool. You could even have another spectator choose what 5 cards you use.

Then instruct spectator 2 to take the cards, remove one of them (and place it face down on the table), and then arrange the remaining four cards in any order (s)he wishes. (What the audience doesn't know is that Spectator 2 is a stooge.) Then you take the cards, and within mere seconds you know the identity of the face-down card on the table. (Of course, you may want to embellish this part to your liking.) Quote:

I've done other card magic tricks where one of the spectators is a stooge, but once that secret gets out, then the performance becomes less of a magic feat, and more of a trick to be figured out. With the right crowd, though, that can still be fun for everyone. |

Personally, I don't like this *stooge* approach. I believe this idea is based on Trost's Significator Cards. Takes a certain knack, but no stooges involved. Just performed it two days ago for a group of seasoned magicians. Got the biggest compliment of all. EACH ONE said, "I have no idea how you did that!"
And none of them had ever seen it before! You can use a borrowed deck. It's one of my top go-to effects.

Thanks for the information about the non-stooge idea, Atom! I've never been a fan of using stooges either, but thought the mathematical principles used would be a good basis for other effects. Where can I learn more about his routine?
