Somehow I survived last night's local huge windstorm, and a 24-hour electrical outage. That's minor. But 24 hours with no internet? Horrible! And the worst part is, it reminded me that I was never cut out for life on the carnival lot. Not ezcept in my dreams. I like my own little air-conditioned home too much, with all my stuff around me, and the bleepin' internet 24-7!
But somehow the net came back in time to post Ballycast #55 So step right up, you'll see the strange people (and they don't come much stranger than Jay and Hans Braggart), plus Don Driver's "Jam Auction" DVD, another free book for you, and so much more! |

What you Guys think the Carnival is like, is in your Dreams of a time long gone...Myself and each of my Guys have AC...we also 99.9% of the time have Internet, and we always have power even if the Grid goes down as we carry Our own Generator, and while we are at it, To operate a successful Sideshow on the Midway today is the Hardest to stay afloat as it has EVER been in all of History...However, the Living Conditions have never been better...If the Living conditions are not good, then it is solely because the Operator has made that choice...to quote the Late Elephant man Robert "Smokey" Jones..."You can be Clean and be in this Business also"...Love Ballycast, just wish Somebody would "Look", "Learn" and try to comprehend this isn't 50 years ago, and the Modern day Sideshow isn't and can't be a True 10 in 1...Isnt living under the stage, isn't Fleecing the Public, and the Definitions are dictated by the Times, NOT History...Sorry to go off on a rant...

Now, look, pal - just a few years ago (2007 to be precise) my first interviewee was "Freak Prodigy" Brett Loudermilk, and at that time, don't I recall that some were scoffing at him for being too soft to take life on the lot his first time out? Of course, they're not laughing now.
Or do I recall wrong? |

You are not only wrong, you are DEAD wrong...Nobody was upset at Brett for not being able to Hang..We realise its not for everybody....We were upset at the way he discredited Jimmy Long to try to make up for his own short comings..Brett to his credit owned up and came clean...Any Showman of credibility will defend the Jimmy Longs, The Gatormans, The Racetracks etc, over anybody! Performers or otherwise! The Jimmy Longs of this world take loyalty to levels you would not know or understand......Y-know, if you and others are going to call yourselves Historians, You really should make a effort to get the the Facts straight...Uh, Pal!!!...

And if you are referring to the conditions on the show Brett was on, Perhaps you should put aside your Awe of the "King" and grow some b@lls and ask him the tough questions on the next Ballycast...

Sorry, I'm not "the crusading reporter."
What Brett said reflected his own take on his experience, it represented the way he saw it, and his view deserves its place on the record. If listeners choose to interpret his experience differently, they can arrive at their own conclusions, and either keep their own counsel or chime in publicly by posting here, or email me, or get their voice on the podcast. |

Whatever, I have bigger worries then the interpretations of Johnny come lately's and the opines of First O-Mays...

I was Born a Townie...Since I was a Kid, I desired to be a Showman..Not the Cliche...as Rick West would say, "Done Talkin"...

Back to the subject of the actual podcast, I enjoyed it. Good interview with the Braggart Bros.

Next time, recollections of Norman Corwin, The Man Who "Taught" Me To Speak, and after that magician Walt Hudson (at the suggestion of Don Driver).
Or else, I'll just sulk and do music episodes until the end of the year. Stand back ... STAND BACK THE LOT OF YOU! This is a microphone in my hand and I'm not afraid to use it! |

Well I have to say you are both right, it really depends on who you work for. Jim and his guys do have it pretty good as do myself and my help but on the same lot you will still see waynes side too. There is a guy on the the show right now whose help sleeps wherever they land and shower "occasionally" at best. My point is,two people on the same show might have two totally different experiences.
